Australia retired
2014 Epsom Derby winner Australia retired and will no longer feature on British Champions Day at Ascot next weekend.
Earlier this year, Aidan O’Brien described Australia as the best horse he had ever trained. The thoroughbred colt has picked up over £2m in prize money in a career which has seen him claim five wins from eight starts.
Speaking to Channel Four, spokesman for owners Coolmore Stud, Kevin Buckley, said: “He developed a problem in a right hind hoof. The decision was made yesterday to retire him.”
He went on to say that at this stage of his career, the belief in the Ballydoyle team was that it wasn’t worth risking Australia at Ascot. He continued: “We were all looking forward to it (going to Ascot), but, as you can appreciate, any type of setback like that jeopardises the training regime.
“Hence we had to take that decision he wouldn’t be ready for the Champion Stakes.”
Australia was likely to be a big draw at Ascot and his withdrawal will come as a big blow to race organisers.
