Ayr Gold Cup Festival 2014
Saturday’s Ayr Gold Cup preview….
So Robbie and Ellie, two of the three ‘golden girls’ have made the draw for Saturday’s big race for which there are some decent betting opportunities so let’s review the chief contenders.
After his success at the Curragh on Sunday, David O’Meara’s Watchable, heads up the ante-post market and is a rapidly improving sprinter who has an outstanding chance on form. If the exertions of last week are behind him then he’s a leading contender and could be a group horse in the making, however drawn unfavourably in 5.
Alben Star has proved consistent, with best efforts of fourth in the Wokingham and third in the Stewards’ Cup. That was backed up with a fine run in a listed at Newmarket last time out. He should be in the mix at the finish but drawn in 7. Jack Garritty will have to use every bit of his has a 5lb allowance and looks just about each-way value if a double digit price?
Alan Bailey saddles our notebooker, GO FAR who has impressed this back end, drawn 14 looks to have a great chance with the high numbers going well this week?
Amy Ryan bids to become the first female to ride the winner of the Gold Cup on Blaine. Trained by her father Kevin Ryan, won the Scottish Stewards Cup at Hamilton but then ran poorly at Goodwood in the actual Stewards Cup. Drawn at the wrong side of the course looks to have ended her chances.
Ryan goes with three others in a bid to win the race for a fourth time. Captain Ramius, successful in 2012 is drawn eight again. Hamza is drawn low in stall six and York Glory high in gates 21.
Ryan is quoted as saying, “I thought York Glory would run very well in the Portland and then he disappointed us. He’s struggling to find his form, but if he did come back to himself he’d be dangerously well handicapped”.
One that could run a big race at a price is James Tate’s Ruwwaiyan who has dropped back to sprinting but now looks poorly drawn in 1. He looked a shade unlucky in the Stewards’ Cup, having left himself with plenty to do two furlongs out but was running on at the finish.
