Today’s Betfair Handicap Hurdle should be a cracking competitive race judged on past runnings.
Previously known as ‘The Schweppes, the race has been won by top class animals like Zarkandar, My Tent or Yours, Get Me Out Of Here who have all either won or placed at the Cheltenham Festival.
Here’s the trendsetter guide to past runnings…
- All of the last 14 winners had finished in the top 2 in at least 1 of their last 2 runs
- 13 of the last 14 winners were aged 5-7yo
- 13 of the last 14 winners came from the top 7 in the betting
- 13 of the last 14 winners returned 16/1 or under
- 13 of the last 14 winners were rated 149 or less (2012 rated 151)
- 9 of the last 13 winners had a top 3 finish in a class 2 or better handicap hurdle
- All of the last 14 winners had won a hurdle race at 2m – 2m1f
- 12 of the last 14 winners had run between 1-4 times since October
- 13 of the last 14 winners had run 15 or less times over hurdles
- Only 2 of the last 14 winners had won more than 2 races since October
- 7 of the last 13 winners contested either the Pierse Hurdle or the H’cap Hurdle at Cheltenham’s end of January meeting
- 8 of the last 9 winners were aged 5-7yo & had run 15 or fewer times over hurdles
- 8 of the last 9 winners had a recent top 2 finish & were rated 149 or less
So what’s the conclusion…..
If we take those runners that pass the 5 main trends in the grid we have 9 remaining. The last 7 winners have been 5 or 6yo’s with the last 4 having had just 3 runs each.
We don’t have any that are that lightly raced this year but towards the bottom we have a 5yo with just 6 runs his belt including a 2nd place finish last time out in a race that has proved a terrific guide for this contest
That makes TOTALIZE who will love the heavy going and who we had a good touch about when getting 12/1 EW in the Steel Plate And Sections Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham last time out as the horse with the best profile….best priced 14/1 with Skybet.
