Boxing Day Premier League Previews
Hull v Man United (12:45)
Hull have been involved in the lowest scoring games this season with 13 of their 17 fixtures providing fewer than three goals, seven of which offered no more than two. They do however have the best defensive home record, conceding fewer goals than any other team (3). However only Aston Villa (6) have scored fewer home goals as the KC Stadium has seen fewer goals than any other stadium (10). Steve Bruce has not beaten Man U as manager of any of his previous clubs, losing 14 of his 18 matches.
Man United have picked up in the last few matches and have won back to back league games for just the second time this season. They have found the going easier away from home this season and are unbeaten on their travels in five. They have a great Boxing Day record winning 16 of their previous 17 fixtures and have won their last seven in all competitions with Hull.
Hull’s home record is fantastic but when you look at who they’ve played there so far it doesn’t really give the same kind of effect. They’ve played 8 at home so far; beating Liverpool, Sunderland, West Ham and Norwich. Losing to Crystal Palace, and drawing with Cardiff, Villa and Stoke.
The win against Liverpool aside, Hull haven’t really beaten much. People may then say that United aren’t the same team they were last season. My answer would be that they are, but they just haven’t really clicked under Moyes yet.
Hull will attempt to frustrate United, as they do most teams that visit the KC, but United know the importance of this clash and we think they’ll come good. The 21/20 for the -1 asian handicap (money back if they win by 1, full win if they win by more) looks good enough to me.
Suggested bets
Hull to score zero goals @ 2.15 Bet Butler or Man United (-1 Asian Handicap) @ 2.03 bet365
Aston Villa v Crystal Palace
Villa have failed to score in four of their last five Premier League home games, and have the worst home record this season. There have been at least three goals in six of their last 10 home games against bottom-six clubs. They are very slow starters and have scored just one first-half goal in their last 12 Premier League matches.
Despite Crystal Palace’s resurgence under Tony Pulis only Sunderland have picked up as few points as the Eagles on their travels (3).They were unlucky last time out at Chelsea, but have still lost seven of their eight away matches. Losing by two or more goals in three of their five trips to middle-third teams.
Suggested bets
Over 2.5 goals @ 2.25 Bet Butler for the brave…… or for the more conservative Over 1.5 goals @1/3 bet365
Cardiff v Southampton
Cardiff have drawn the first half in five of their eight home games and remain the only side not to be leading at half-time this season (D10-L7). The Bluebirds have netted a paltry five goals in their previous nine games. However, they have won their last five home games with the Saints.
There have been fewer than three goals in 11 of Southampton’s previous 12 Premier League away matches. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last eight matches which is the current longest run of any Premier League team. In the 13 games Paolo Gazzaniga has played the Saints have conceded 1.62GPG as supposed to the 1.11GPG without him.
Suggested bets
First Half Draw @ 2.20 Bet Butler or under 2.5 goals @ 7/10 bet365
Chelsea v Swansea
Despite Chelsea’s shaky form they have won seven of their last 10 home fixtures with middle-third clubs, drawing the other three. Only Man City have picked up more points at home than Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea (22). The Portuguese manager is also defending a 68 match unbeaten home run in the Premier League, a record.
Swansea have won just one of their last five league matches and have lost eight of their last 10 away encounters with top-six clubs. They have won only twice in their 13 matches against the Blues in all competitions.
Suggested bets
Chelsea (-1.25) Asian Handicap @ 1.80 Bet Butler
Everton v Sunderland
Only Sunderland and Southampton have the chance to make sure Everton go 2013 unbeaten at Goodison Park, a feat they last achieved in 1962. Everton’s tally of 34 points after 17 matches is two points off their best return at this stage of the season and just two off Martinez’s tally with Wigan last season.
Sunderland have won just once in their last 17 outings against Everton (W1-D4-L12). They have lost 11 of their previous 15 away matches. There have been at least three goals in 13 of 20 Sunderland’s last 20 away games.
Suggested bets
Over 2.5 goals @ 1.70 Bet Butler or Over 2.5 goals and Everton win@ 1.32 bet365
Newcastle v Stoke
Newcastle have lost just once at home this season and have won eight of their last 12 home matches against middle-third teams. Only Manchester City and Everton have picked up more points than the Magpies in the previous six matches (13).
Stoke have lost just once in their last eight league matches. However, they have lost 15 of their last 20 encounters against top-six clubs, conceding the opening goal in 14 of those games.
Suggested bets
Newcastle win @ 1.80 Bet Butler or BTTS @ 1/1 bet365
Norwich v Fulham
Norwich have only lost three of their last 17 home league games (W6-D8-L3). Only Cardiff have a worse half-time record than the Canaries (W3-D5-L9). There have been three or more goals in seven of their last 12 matches.
Fulham have had at least three goals in six of their last eight fixtures and the Cottagers have conceded the opening goal in 10 of 12 away fixtures. Only City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal have had more match goals than Fulham this season. Meanwhile, only Southampton and West Brom have picked up fewer points in their last six games (4).
Fulham have looked more sturdier at the back with Rene Meulensteen, so maybe a drawn match is on the cards.
Suggested bets
Over 3.5 goals @ 3.25 Bet Butler for the brave….or MATCH DRAWN @ 5/2 bet365
Spurs v West Brom
Spurs picked up a good result in their last fixture but have a poor home record this season, winning just three of their eight league fixtures and just one in their last six. However, they have a good record against the Baggies, winning four and drawing three in their last seven encounters. Tottenham have opened the scoring in seven of their previous 10 home matches.
West Brom have won just one of their last 10 Premier League away fixtures (W1-D4-L5). They have lost the first half in nine of their previous 12 away matches against top-half clubs, recording L/L double results in 11 of 16 trips to top-half teams.
Suggested bet
Spurs HT/ FT @ 2.10 Bet Butler
West Ham v Arsenal
The Hammers have a poor record against the Gunners, losing eight and winning none of their last 10 encounters. Only Hull have averaged fewer goals than the Hammers (2.12 GPG) and they have had five goalless draws this campaign, a league high.
Only Spurs have picked up more points on the road than Arsenal so far this season. The last time Arsenal had more points at this stage of the season (35) was in 2007/08. After going seven away fixtures without a win to Sam Allardyce’s teams, Wenger has won the last two.
Suggested bets
West Ham goals – Zero @ 2.35 Bet Butler
Man City v Liverpool (17:30)
Pick of the day in the Premier League is definitely the fixture at the Etihad, two sides in red hot form who are never short of goals. This is the clash between the two highest scoring sides in the league this season. It really could be a race to five with the number of goal scorers on show. Step forward, Luis Suarez, Alvaro Negredo, Philippe Coutinho and Yaya Toure just to name a few. What a match this should be!
Man City are the only club to maintain a 100{70aeb3532cb26dbe277d25ea128ebb74de84b9bd22e1583b0eb1b73768e061f6} home record this season, winning all eight matches at the Etihad, scoring 35 and conceding just five. They have scored in their last 58 home league matches. There have been six draws in their last nine head to head clashes, with the other three 3-0 home wins, two for City and one for Liverpool. City have won each of their home games by at least two goals, scoring four or more on five occasions.
Despite Liverpool’s thrashing of Spurs, they have won just once in five away league matches. Suarez has played a part in 16 of Liverpool’s last 17 goals, scoring nine and providing seven assists. There have been at least three goals in 17 of Liverpool’s previous 20 league matches.
