Capital One Cup Final 2014: City see off Black Cats
City saw off Sunderland 3-1 at Wembley in the Capital One Cup final 2014, with Yaya Toure, Samir Nasri and Jesus Navas on target.
Sunderland frustrated City in the first-half and held a 1-0 lead at the break after Fabio Borini managed to squeeze the ball past Costel Pantilimon on 10 minutes after outpacing Martin Demichelis and evading Vincent Kompany’s challenge.
The Black Cats defended admirably to deny Manuel Pellegrini’s side any clear-cut chances in the first-half, although Borini did well to head the ball over his own crossbar following a corner with Toure lurking.
City finally managed to find a breakthrough on 55 minutes thanks to a sublime finish from Toure, who placed his effort into the top corner with a first-time shot from distance.
Nasri gave City the lead soon after, with a fantastic effort with the outside of his boot after connecting with Aleksandar Kolarov’s cross.
Despite conceding two goals within the space of two second-half minutes Sunderland didn’t let their heads drop and had chances to get back into the game, with Pantilimon on hand to deny Steven Fletcher on 71 minutes.
However, substitute Navas made sure of the result in the closing stages following a slick counter-attack as he slotted the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle.
City will now turn their attentions to the Premier League and Champions League, with Pellegrini’s side 6/4 to secure the league title and 66/1 to triumph in Europe.
Sunderland are currently one point adrift of safety and they can be backed at 2/5 not to be relegated.
