Carlingford Lough for McCoy

Tony McCoy confirms he will ride Irish Hennessy winner Carlingford Lough on his final appearance in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The 19-time champion jockey announced he would retire from riding at the end of the season earlier this year and is beginning to make plans for his final Cheltenham Festival.

The 40-year-old, who has won every major Jumps race there is in Britain, will be looking to claim his third Gold Cup this year.

McCoy has previously won the feature race of the meeting on board Mr Mulligan in 1997 and Synchronised in 2012, and hopes Carlingford Lough can deliver another victory.

McCoy was in the saddle when the nine-year-old won the Irish Hennessy earlier this month and has opted to stick with the 11.0 shot, despite having the option to ride Holywell, who is also a 11.0 for the Gold Cup.

McCoy wrote in the Cheltenham Festival blog: “I couldn’t be happier to say that Carlingford Lough will be my ride in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

“He gave me a great feel winning the Irish Hennessy and I am very much looking forward to riding him in the Gold Cup, if he lines up. Gold Cup day is probably the most important day of the whole jumping year and I am hoping he has got a live chance.”

The JP-McManus owned gelding was sixth on his previous outing at the Cheltenham Festival when he failed to challenge O’faolains Boy in the RSA Chase.

Meanwhile, Holywell has won twice at the Festival in the past, most recently claiming the Baylis & Harding Affordable Luxury Handicap Chase last year.
