Racing News

Some news on a couple of advanced potential selections for the Royal Ascot meeting with MUSTAJEEB likely to be targeted at the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

That came after stamping himself as a potential star of the sprinting division with victory in the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh.

The four-year-old was running over six furlongs for the first time since his juvenile debut, but he had no problems with dropping back down in trip when accounting for a smart field in the Group Two contest.

With Sole Power and Gordon Lord Byron both failing to fire, Mustajeeb came from just off the pace in the hands of Pat Smullen to show a  decisive turn of foot inside the final furlong.

The obvious race for him is the Diamond Jubilee over six at Royal Ascot and he’s also in the July Cup.

Dermot Weld

Trainer Dermot Weld’s Mustajeeb won over seven furlongs in the Jersey Stakes 12 months ago and is 10/1 to win the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

Mustajeeb’s sire Nayef was a four-time Group One winner over middle distances and his son finished third behind Kingman in the Irish 2000 Guineas last season. Mustajeeb also finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile on his final start last season.

His win in the Greenlands Stakes formed part of a big-race double for owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, who also struck on the other side of the Irish Sea with Mutarakez in the Silver Bowl Stakes at Haydock.

Mutarakez took time to hit his stride, but looked a cosy winner in the end and he will also have Royal Ascot on his agenda for his next race.

Brian Meehan will wait to see what the handicapper does before deciding whether to keep Mutarakez at a mile for the Britannia or step him up to 1m2f for the Tercentenary Stakes.

Today’s Cartmel Racing

14.25 Cartmel 25th Anniversary Sticky Toffee Novices’ Hurdle (4) 2m1f110y

Timeform Top Rated
135 2. ROMULUS DU DONJON Oliver Sherwood Leighton Aspell
130 1. DIRE STRAITS Neil King Trevor Whelan
120p 5. NEVER UP George Moore Henry Brooke

Analyst’s Verdict: Romulus du Donjon may not be one to take very short odds about, but sets the form standard on his Market Rasen victory, and can take the opener. Dire Straits is the forecast choice, ahead of the unexposed Never Up.

15.00 Tony Connell Memorial Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (4) 2¾m

Timeform Top Rated
119 2. ALLBARNONE William Kinsey Denis O’Regan
117+ 4. HURRICANE RITA Stuart Coltherd Grant Cockburn (5)
117+ 8. SOLWAY PRINCE Lisa Harrison Ryan Day (7)

Analyst’s Verdict: Allbarnone wasn’t ideally placed when a creditable third last time at Bangor, and running off the same mark, can land the spoils. Hurricane Rita could give him most to do after her improved showing last time, while Solway Prince is also respected.

15.35 Bet Toteexacta Handicap Chase (3) 2m1f110y

Timeform Top Rated
138 2. VENGEUR DE GUYE Lucinda Russell Tom Scudamore
137 4. CHESTNUT BEN Peter Winks Sean Bowen (3)
136 7. SERGEANT PINK Dianne Sayer Brian Hughes

Analyst’s Verdict: Mason Hindmarsh took to chasing like a duck to water when scoring at Sedgefield this month. He was competitive off higher marks over hurdles and has sound prospects of following up. Sergeant Pink is likely to pop up again at some stage and may prove a bigger threat than Chestnut Ben.

16.10 Bet Totetrifecta Handicap Chase (3) 2m5f110y

Timeform Top Rated
143+ 1. PRESENTING JUNIOR Martin Todhunter Graham Watters (3)
141 3. ROUGE ET BLANC Oliver Sherwood Leighton Aspell
140+ 5. GLEN COUNTESS Sue Smith Sean Quinlan

Analyst’s Verdict: Veteran C&D winner Cruchain showed he was no back number when placed both outings off higher marks in 2014. He has a good record fresh and may prove better value than the in-form trio Presenting Junior, Sharp Rise and Glen Countess, who all need to crank it up another notch to defy their new marks.

16.40 Burlington Stone Grand Veterans’ Handicap Chase (3) 3¾m

Timeform Top Rated
143x 2. LACKAMON Sue Smith Sean Quinlan
139 4. TULLAMORE DEW Micky Hammond Joe Colliver (3)
136+ 10. HINTON INDIANA Dan Skelton Harry Skelton

Analyst’s Verdict: Lackamon hasn’t won for over two years, but the assessor continues to cut him some slack and he has sound prospects of ending the drought, following another respectable in-frame effort at Haydock in April. Ballyvoneen and Beau Dandy are others worthy of serious consideration.

17.15 Hadwins Maiden Hunters’ Chase (6) 2m5f110y

Timeform Top Rated
115+ 4. KILMACALLOGUE BAY C. T. Dawson Mr C. Dawson (3)
114 3. DEAD RINGA Mrs E. J. Clark Miss E. Todd (7)
112 5. MASTER BUTCHER N. W. Alexander Mr Kit Alexander (3)

Analyst’s Verdict: Master Butcher ran to a fair level when third on his Perth hunter debut last month and a reproduction of that form might be good enough to see him come out on top here. Mister D’s Kelso second has been boosted by the winner going in again since and he’s an obvious threat, while Kilmacallogue Bay has been an improved performer in the pointing field of late and could figure on debut in this sphere.

17.45 Swan Hotel & Spa Handicap Hurdle (3) 2¾m

Timeform Top Rated
137+ 4. VAIHAU Jonjo O’Neill Patrick Cowley (7)
135+ 3. JACKIES SOLITAIRE Peter Bowen Sean Bowen (3)
134 2. SEALOUS SCOUT Donald McCain Henry Brooke

Analyst’s Verdict: It finally all clicked for Vaihau at Towcester last week and it’s doubtful a 7 lb penalty will stop him if he turns up here in the same form. Manballandall made a winning start for Susan Corbett at Hexham earlier in the month and could be the one to give the selection most to think about.
