Chelsea to go unbeaten
The question on most people’s lips already is whether to back Chelsea to go unbeaten through the season and emulate the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’.
“No, no, no,” said Mourinho. “This is the Premier League and in this moment, 10 years after the last one to do it, football has changed so much, and the Premier League has changed so much that it’s impossible to do it.”
Wenger, though, sees things differently and, although he believes that it is too early to seriously contemplate anyone matching his proud record, he is not ruling it out. He also does not go along with Mourinho’s assertion that the Premier League is significantly more challenging from top to bottom than a decade ago when Arsenal finished the season without losing.
“Everything is possible in any moment,” said Wenger. “It’s only 10 years since we did it and football has not changed in 10 years. But it’s very early to say that. We played 49 games – more than a season – so it’s a bit early.”
The biggest change, according to Wenger, is not that teams are more dangerous in attack but that actually they are defensibly better because of the improved physical capacity of players.
Watching Chelsea squeeze the life out of Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday the influence of Nemanja Matic as the holding midfield man and the line-up of Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry and Cesar Azpilicueta in defence, you couldn’t help think they are built on solid foundtions.
With nearly a third of the season gone, Chelsea already have a grip on the title with an eight point lead over reigning champions Manchester City they are just 1.21 to win it.
Somebody asked him if they really could match Arsenal’s 2003-4 Invincibles by going through the season unbeaten and he said. No, No, No……it wasn’t possible…….if you want to back them it’s 9.00 and 2.50 Ito go unbeaten at home.
The work ethic that runs through this Chelsea team is exceptional, from Terry at the back to the tireless Diego Costa up front, they understand that talent doesn’t win games until you’ve earned the right to show it off.
Mourinho keeps fantastic consistency of selection and his team are full of seasoned professionals who keep playing despite minor injuries. They have learned how to handle the demands of playing up to 60 games a season and still maintain their standard of performance.
It makes you wonder what they can achieve. Favourites for the Capital One Cup at 2.48, they are also 5.9 favourites for the FA Cup. Then there’s the holy grail of recapturing the Champions League, where they are currently fourth in the betting at 7.6.
Could they even go better than Manchester United’s immortal 1999 treble team and win all four, for which they are available to back at 67.0???
