Cheltenham Jockeys Title Race
Who’s going to be Top Jock at Cheltenham 2014?
Punters love to debate the merits of top jockeys and we’re taking a look at who is the best bet between Ruby Walsh and Tony ‘AP’ McCoy when it comes to riding winners at the Cheltenham Festival.
Obviously, the likes of Barry Geraghty, Richard Johnson, Robert Thornton, Paul Carberry and rising stars such as Sam Twiston-Davies and Bryan Cooper (see interview) always warrant the utmost respect, but the big two are still ahead of the chasing pack according to most pundits.
Barry Geraghty who rode five winners at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival is installed as the 3/1 second favourite to land the title whilst eighteen time UK Champion NH jockey, Tony McCoy, is priced at 8/1 to be top jockey at the Cheltenham Festival for a third time having last won the award in 1997 and 1998.
Newly retained Gigginstown House Stud rider Bryan Cooper is on offer at 16/1 alongside Sam Twiston-Davies whilst Daryl Jacob is currently priced at 14/1.
Noel Fehily who recently recorded a century of winners this season in England can be backed at 33/1 whilst Paul Townend and Tom Scudamore are also installed at the same price.
Liam Glynn, PR Executive at Boylesports said “We have already seen considerable support for Ruby Walsh at 4/7 to be crowned Cheltenham Festival Top Jockey having only priced up the odds on Tuesday evening.”
Verdict….
Punters certainly believe that Ruby will have enough ammunition throughout the Cheltenham Festival to land a record eight Cheltenham Festival Top Jockey crown and if the support continues to flood in the current 4/7 that is available will no doubt harden dramatically.
We have to say if you had a firm favourite in a championship race you’d trust Ruby to get the job done with the minimum of fuss, no mistakes and a stylish finish to make everyone feel good, but if you had a handicapper with an each-way chance you’d much rather have AP pushing him along in the hope that he may just get that last ounce of effort out of your selection that means the difference between place money and hitting the jackpot.
Overall, though, the question is who is the better rider at the Cheltenham Festival and for us, Ruby’s relaxed approach suits the big occasion more, he’s a better judge of jumping fences and just knows when to deliver a challenge up the hill on great horses.
