The second high-profile derby of the day feels somewhat different to the first – whereas the two north London clubs are in excellent form, Everton and Liverpool have struggled badly compared to last season.
In those kind of seasons for the Merseyside clubs, however, the derby takes on extra importance – and both sides will be desperate to win here.

Everton could give a debut to Aaron Lennon, who joined the club on loan from Tottenham on the final day of the transfer window.
Midfielder James McCarthy is set to return after six weeks out with a hamstring injury.
Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge could make his first club start since August, having played twice as a substitute since his comeback from injury.
There are slight injury doubts over Lazar Markovic, Adam Lallana and Lucas.
Statistics….
Head-to-head
- Everton have won just one of their last seven Premier League home games against Liverpool (W1, D2, L4).
- Liverpool’s only defeat in the 16 most recent league meetings came at Goodison Park in October 2010 (W8, D7, L1).
- The Merseyside derby has produced 20 red cards in the Premier League, more than any other fixture in the division. However, there has not been a sending off in the last seven derbies in league and cup.
Everton
- Everton’s victory at Crystal Palace last weekend ended a six-match winless streak in the league (eight in all competitions).
- The Toffees have only managed one win in their last five home matches in the league.
- No team has scored more Premier League goals in the first five minutes than Everton’s four this season.
- Premier League fixtures at Goodison Park have produced an average of three goals a game this season, the joint second-highest in the league.
Liverpool
- Liverpool are unbeaten in seven league games, and have won five of their last six.
- The Reds have won four of their last five away games, keeping clean sheets in the last three.
- At this stage last season, Liverpool were eight points better off, with 46 points after 23 games.
- Liverpool have won eight of 12 Premier League games that Lucas has started this season (67{70aeb3532cb26dbe277d25ea128ebb74de84b9bd22e1583b0eb1b73768e061f6}) and just three of 11 when he hasn’t (27{70aeb3532cb26dbe277d25ea128ebb74de84b9bd22e1583b0eb1b73768e061f6}).
- Steven Gerrard is the leading Premier League scorer in this fixture with nine goals, but only two of those came at Goodison Park, in 2001 and 2005.
Preview…..
Liverpool left it very late midweek to maintain their FA Cup challenge but the third favourites for the competition did get through and that will keep confidence high as they face local rivals this weekend. They travel across Stanley Park, in good form and still in the hunt for European and FA Cup success as well as a top four finish.
The Reds have held the bragging rights on Merseyside for some time now, they are unbeaten in their last eight derbies, their last defeat in this fixture home or away was October 2010 at Goodison Park.
Unfortunately, the Blue side of the city haven’t got much to be happy about, they are sitting 12th in the league with just 26 points. They had a terrible Christmas where they lost all four games over the festive period. However, since then the Toffees have shown some signs of recovery, unbeaten in their last three.
Historically this game has produced goals, the last three meetings producing 12. However, if you are looking to back goals just a reminder that five of Everton’s last seven home games have seen two or less. Liverpool have won their last three on the road but they were against Aston Villa, Burnley and Sunderland. When they have played away this season against sides currently 13th or above their record isn’t that inspiring, they have lost five out of six, conceding 13 goals and scoring five.
Goodison Park is never an easy ground to visit for anyone and I think being able to back Everton in the Draw No Bet market at 2.4 is a fair price.
