Friday Newsletter – 22nd February

It’s FREE FRIDAY at Catterick today where both enclosures are FOC entry 🙂 One possibly of note is track specialist STRAIDNAHANNA going in the (15.35), he’s quietly dropped the weights from 136 to virtually his last winning mark here last April and wasn’t far away LTO at Newcastle – one for the lumpers around 4’s?

We’ve two member suggestions below coming from that meeting and the Devon National with Timeform for that feature.

Yesterday I think we were mugged by two jumping errors at Huntingdon by Thounder who only finished less than a couple of lengths down and made a hash of the last – we’ll note him NTO.

For those on the £1k to £10k challenge it’s currently a 35% win/place strike rate…..our bank is now £750.37 and stakes are now £9.38 EW

1.30 gg.co.uk Handicap Hurdle (4) 2m7f25y

Timeform Top Rated:
132p 8. PRINTING DOLLARS Warren Greatrex Mr Sam Waley-Cohen (3)
131 3. MAX FORTE Chris Down James Bowen
130 1. BUYWISE Evan Williams Miss Isabel Williams (7)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Printing Dollars seemed well suited by the step up in trip when winning her maiden over C&D last month, and there should be more to come from her now venturing into handicaps. Super Snipe was unsuited by the steady gallop on his Ludlow handicap debut so is worth another chance, while course-specialist Trans Express is also considered.

2.05 Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier) (2) 2m7f25y

Timeform Top Rated:
161 2. THOMAS CAMPBELL Nicky Henderson James Bowen
160 5. ROBIN WATERS Dan Skelton Lorcan Williams (5)
159? 12. LORD OF THE ISLAND Fergal O’Brien Jonjo O’Neill Jr. (5)

Analyst’s Verdict:
A competitive affair. Robin Waters disappointed on his chase bow/reappearance (had wind op since) but did very well over hurdles last season and is selected to quickly get his career back on track returned to the smaller obstacles. The return to a longer trip will be in the favour of Thomas Campbell, while Boyhood doesn’t make it to the track too often but has built up a solid record.

2.40 Visit Exeter Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (4) 2m175y

Timeform Top Rated:
138P 2. EPATANTE Nicky Henderson Barry Geraghty
132 1. CODED MESSAGE Ben Case Daryl Jacob
127 7. PENNY POET Neil Mulholland Noel Fehily

Analyst’s Verdict:
Epatante was impressive on her stable debut back in November and should be very hard to beat here before a possible tilt at the Dawn Run at Cheltenham. Penny Poet chased home a smart sort on her Wincanton hurdle bow on Boxing Day and gets the nod for the forecast spot ahead of Coded Message.

3.10 GG Tips ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle (4) 2¼m111y

Timeform Top Rated:
141p 3. UMBRIGADO David Pipe Tom Scudamore
140p 2. ASK DILLON Fergal O’Brien Paddy Brennan
134 9. FLY TO MARS Colin Tizzard Aidan Coleman

Analyst’s Verdict:
Ask Dillon will prove best over further but is hard to get away from such is the good impression he made when winning on his hurdles debut over 21f at Ascot in December. His Ballymore and Albert Bartlett Cheltenham entries look significant. Haldon Hill, Paul Nicholls’ new-recruit Accomplice, and Umbrigado are the dangers.

3.45 GG Fast Results Mares’ Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier) (3) 2¼m111y

Timeform Top Rated:
139 2. ANNIE MC Jonjo O’Neill Jonjo O’Neill Jr. (5)
135 3. GIVEAWAY GLANCE Alan King Tom Cannon
134 1. DINOS BENEFIT Colin Tizzard Harry Cobden

Analyst’s Verdict:
Annie Mc confirmed the promise of her Ascot run when routing the opposition at Chepstow a month ago and a subsequent 10 lb rise may not prevent the follow up. Love Lane is going the right way too and is feared most, though Aimee de Sivola is capable of better now handicapping.

4.20 Healthy Pets Devon National Handicap Chase (3) 3¾m153y

Timeform Top Rated:
148p 14. COBOLOBO Jonjo O’Neill Noel Fehily
147 6. JEPECK Anthony Honeyball Rex Dingle (5)
147 9. COURTOWN OSCAR Philip Kirby Jonjo O’Neill Jr. (5)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Cobolobo was a bit disappointing at Wincanton 78 days ago but is worth another chance to confirm the promise of his chase debut with this extra distance likely to suit. The other unexposed runner is Samuel Jackson, who should improve for the step up in trip, while Jepeck also needs considering after his impressive winning return at Ffos Las on debut for this yard.

4.50 GG Racing Podcast Chase (Novices’ Limited Handicap) (3) 3m54y

Timeform Top Rated:
152p 3. SKY PIRATE Jonjo O’Neill Noel Fehily
151 4. MOLINEAUX Colin Tizzard Tom Scudamore
148p 1. CAPTAIN CATTISTOCK Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden

Analyst’s Verdict:
Captain Cattistock has always promised to prove a better chaser than hurdler so, with a satisfactory debut in this sphere under his belt, he’s taken to make a winning switch to handicaps and overhaul Sky Pirate, who was in the process of running a big race at Cheltenham when last seen. Molineux is the clear third choice.

5.20 Follow @ggcouk On Twitter Standard Open National Hunt Flat (5) 2m175y

Timeform Top Rated:
121 2. GET IN THE QUEUE Harry Fry Noel Fehily
117 3. KALOOKI Philip Hobbs Micheal Nolan
111p 1. ERITAGE Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden

Analyst’s Verdict:
Get In The Queue was very strong at the finish when a ready winner on debut at Uttoxeter in December and is up to defying a penalty in this sphere. It’s not easy to quantify what Eritage achieved when also successful in France over the summer but he’s since joined a powerful yard, while Kalooki can remain competitive in this sphere.
