Good Friday Racing News: 18th April 2014
Good Friday racing today for the first time in the UK at Lingfield in Surrey and Scottish track Musselburgh.
Lingfield’s finale to a new all-weather racing championships boasts a total of £1m in prize money for seven races. Track officials expect a crowd of over 7,000, with Musselburgh set to welcome 4,000 racegoers.
At Lingfield, Grandeur the mount of three-time champion jockey Ryan Moore for trainer Jeremy Noseda, and Ed Vaughan’s Winter Derby winner Robin Hoods Bay head the field for the concluding Easter Classic.
However, we prefer to look to the turf at Musselburgh as it switches its Saturday card to Friday and hopes to host a three-day Easter weekend festival in the future.
We’ve just had one outing from one of our 12 flat horses to follow with Van Percy winning at the first time of asking……he’s declared in a race run over the Derby course at Epsom next week, so we’ll give a view then if he goes.
Our ‘notebook performance’ horses have had two outings with a 25/1 place with Lincoln winner Ocean Tempest last weekend and Rudi Five One putting up a good effort to finish 5th at Newmarket yesterday in a real hot race with Derby entry Cloudscape coming out on top.
With none going today, here’s a list of early declarations for the coming days….
Yesterday’s other selection MAVEN, was beaten into 2nd by our other commentary horse Wall Of Sound, however if you got the advised early EW price of 8/1 you made a small profit on the day…
Like we have said, none of our ’12 to follow’ or ‘notebook’ horses going but we will have a look at a couple of the races on offer at Musselburgh…
15.50 Musselburgh……Ralph Beckett’s string look to be well forward so we’ll have a look to EXTRA NOBLE to make the frame at a nice EW price. He scored twice at Kempton last year and on his last outing looked to be staying on well in a 7f Group 3 at Newbury.
He’s up against a couple of Mark Johnston’s in Bow Creek and Almargo who both have strong credentials, however for value, we side with our selected and available at a best early bird EW price of 8/1 with BetFred
16.25 Musselburgh…..Kalk Bay maybe a bit of a steamer as he makes a quick reappearance after finishing very strongly at Pontefract on Monday where he didn’t get the clearest of runs. However, without a win since 2012 and only 1 win in 10 at the trip, we think he’ll be poor value?
Instead we look to MAJESTIC MOON. Richard Fahey is bang on at the moment and his charge completed a hat-trick last summer by landing a very strong Goodwood handicap.
If stripping fit first time out he could be good value for the frame at a best EW price 6/1 with Bet Victor and just 4’s and 5’s elsewhere.
Crystal Lake went into our notebook yesterday when Ralp Beckett’s colt landed the ‘Cock O The North’ 8f handicap with the minimum of fuss?
Betfred are offering all new mobile customers a free £10 Sports bet. Once players have used their free £10 bet, they will also be entitled to a £25 Matched Bet.

These are the nags we have highlighted for early season performance where they have looked to have had something in the tank at the end of the race or even ran well from what has been considered a poor draw…..no need to save them….bookmark our page and we will be backing them over their next three outings given conditions are right…
Ocean Tempest (25/1 place), Shaolin, Cathedral, Johnny Cavagin, Rudi Five One (5th), That’s The Spirit, My Kingdom, Forced Family Fun, Dark Ocean, Sacred Act, Secret Pursuit, Shiting Power, True Story, Al Busayyir & Crystal Lake.
