Grand National Meeting: Day 1 2014
Thursday is Grand National Meeting: Day 1 and we are just featuring the one race today…the Grade 1 Aintree Bowl.
Argocat is a smart chaser who won a pair of Limerick Grade 2s last season and posted a career best when adding to tally in that company at Gowran in February. Up against it in this line-up, though.
Dynaste was the leading staying novice in Britain last term, running away with the Mildmay over C&D 12 months ago and cast aside his King George defeat with a smooth Ryanair victory. Major claims.
First Lieutenant beat Menorah and Silviniaco Conti when landing this race in 2013 but hasn’t really looked the same force this term, for all he’s been placed in Lexus and Irish Hennessy. Side-stepped the Gold Cup.
Houblon Des Obeaux is a very smart chaser, especially when the mud is flying, but not up to the task pitched into the Cheltenham Gold Cup and this spring ground won’t be ideal.
Menorah ran well when a close second in this race last year, but has shown nothing in 2 starts this season to justify support this time around, even if making allowances for his typically suspect jumping.
Silviniaco Conti is one of the leading staying chasers around, and improved on reappearance third in the Betfair Chase when overhauling Cue Card in the King George. Only fourth in the Gold Cup despite travelling best.
View…
Silviniaco Conti is the lay of the meeting. He had a tough race at Cheltenham and his attitude was poor. Its hard to split Dynaste and First Lieutenant but Dynaste appears better for the wind operation he’d had before winning at Cheltenham. So 2/1 is probably a fair price and he is proven as he coped with the demands of Cheltenham/Aintree with aplomb last year. Menorah is 11/1 which is a fair each way bet but with only six runners two places to go at.
1-2-3:
- Dynaste….best priced 15/8 with PaddyPower
- Menorah…..best priced EW 12/1 with BetVictor
