Racing News

William Buick firmly believes that the John Gosden-trained duo of Golden Horn and Jack Hobbs are the leading protagonists for the Epsom Derby.

Buick partnered the former to success in the York’s Dante last month, but with Jack Hobbs having since transferred to Buick’s retaining owners Godolphin, he will be trading places with Frankie Dettori on Saturday.

Since the Dante, both Golden Horn and Jack Hobbs have been prominent in the Derby betting and Buick believes that both colts have each other to fear come Classic time.

“I’m very aware that Golden Horn is the main danger, but if I was riding Golden Horn, I would also say Jack Hobbs was the main danger,” the jockey said.

On his own mount, Buick believes there is a strong chance he will have more to give at Epsom.

“You’ve got to remember it has come very thick and fast for him (Jack Hobbs). He won his maiden in the winter at Wolverhampton, went to Sandown and then to the Dante, so it’s all happened very quick.

“He could just be a horse (with whom) the penny is just dropping,” William Buick

Despite Buick’s confidence that Jack Hobbs can improve, Golden Horn goes into the race as the only unbeaten colt in the field, with three wins from three career starts.

The Dermot Weld trained Zawraq, also unbeaten in two starts, was taken out of the race on Thursday morning following  a slight setback in his final piece of work at home in Ireland.

Zawraq’s absence leaves a field of 12 set to line up at Epsom on Saturday, with Jack Hobbs 9/2 to win the race and Golden Horn 6/4.

Betting…

Jack Hobbs is currently 9/2 to win Golden Horn 6/4

Our selection who we backed way back last month at 16’s, GIOVANNI CANALETTO is now a best priced 8/1

Today’s Hamilton Timeform…

14.00 Lockton Maiden Auction Stakes (Qualifier) (5) 5f4y

Top Rated
95 2. RISK ADJUSTED Ann Duffield P. J. McDonald
91+ 1. FIRST BOMBARDMENT David O’Meara David Nolan
84p 5. COTTON CAMERA Richard Fahey Tony Hamilton

Analyst’s Verdict: Cotton Camera can make the most of the weight she receives from Risk Adjusted and make it third time lucky. First Bombardment showed plenty of promise initially, but has failed to progress the last twice and minor place money beckons once again.

14.30 Winning Groundstaff Team Apprentice Handicap (Round One) (6) 5f4y

Top Rated
83 7. PULL THE PIN Heather Dalton Danny Brock
82§ 2. I’LL BE GOOD Alan Berry Joe Doyle (3)
81 3. CHOOKIE’S LASS Keith Dalgleish Shane Gray

Analyst’s Verdict: Pull The Pin left the distinct impression that his losing run will soon be arrested when narrowly foiled in a 16-runner Chepstow handicap recently. If performing to that level once again he will prove a tough nut to crack off the same mark. Sartori wasn’t beaten far despite a bad draw here last time and could be the one for the forecast.

15.00 Watt Fences And Watt Plastics Open Maiden Stakes (5) 6f5y

Top Rated
81 1. ALPHA DELPHINI Bryan Smart Tom Eaves
78p 9. EUXTON Richard Fahey Tony Hamilton
76 3. BEACH ACTION David O’Meara Sam James

Analyst’s Verdict: The step back up to 6f will suit Euxton and, with the likelihood of better to come from the daughter of Equiano, she gets the nod ahead of Alpha Delphini. Second Cut still possesses potential and can also make his present felt, while Pomme de Terre is also in with an each-way shout.

15.30 Alex Fergusson Memorial Handicap (6) 1m65y

Top Rated
85 1. DAY OF THE EAGLE Michael Easterby Duran Fentiman
84 11. LENDAL BRIDGE Tony Coyle Barry McHugh
82 14. ROCKWOOD David C. Griffiths David Allan

Analyst’s Verdict: Day of The Eagle was nicely on top at the finish when resuming winning ways at Wolverhampton last time and is taken to follow up. Indeed, the 9-y-o remains on a feasible mark and, with conditions no problem, he should prove too strong for Lendal Bridge. Neuf des Coeurs and Indian Giver both hit the target last time, but best of the rest could turn out to be the lightly-raced Rockwood.

16.00 Weatherbys Private Banking Hamiltonian Handicap (4) 1m1f36y

Top Rated
97 4. FIRST SITTING David O’Meara Sam James
95 2. ARCHIE’S ADVICE Keith Dalgleish Phillip Makin
94 1. EUTROPIUS Alan Swinbank B. A. Curtis

Analyst’s Verdict: First Sitting made an encouraging debut for David O’Meara at Thirsk last month and, with the step back up in trip a plus, he is taken to strike off what looks a fair opening mark. Push Me encountered traffic problems on her reappearance and will give the selection plenty to think about, while last-time-out winners Archie’s Advice and Eutropius also merit respect.

16.30 Weatherbys Private Banking Handicap (5) 6f5y

Top Rated
87 9. NEW LEASE OF LIFE Keith Dalgleish Phillip Makin
86 4. PABUSAR Heather Dalton Danny Brock (3)
85 5. ENDERBY SPIRIT Bryan Smart Connor Beasley

Analyst’s Verdict: Having won this very race on his seasonal reappearance 12 months ago,Mandalay King is worth siding with. He’s not getting any younger, but he’s 1 lb lower this time round (before taking Jordan Nason’s claim into consideration) and has conditions in his favour. New Lease of Life brings the most recent solid form to the table and has to be feared, while Enderby Spirit is also worth a second look.

17.00 LIB (Ladies In Business) Lunch Handicap (6) 1m5f9y

Top Rated
80 1. KING OF PARADISE Eric Alston Jason Hart
77 6. HARRISON’S CAVE Sharon Watt Phil Dennis (7)
76 5. EILEAN MOR R. Mike Smith Connor Beasley

Analyst’s Verdict: This race revolves around King of Paradise, who will surely make light work of his penalty if in the same mood as when making all here last week. Harrison’s Cave and Schmooze both figure on workable marks and are taken to fill the places.
