Hughie Morrison says Vent De Force can play a big role in next month’s Ascot Gold Cup following his smooth victory in the Henry II Stakes at Sandown.
Richard Hughes made all the running on the four-year-old Hurricane Run colt to take the two-mile Group 3 contest decisively from Chester Cup winner Trip To Paris who was back in second.
The champion jockey ensured the race was a true test of stamina from the front, with Morrison delighted afterwards as he paid tribute to the winner’s versatility.
He said: “Richard took the view that he didn’t want it to turn into a dawdle, and he did it the hard way from the front. That proves he can come from behind or go from the front and you can ride him where you like, which is excellent.”
Hopefully that will put him spot on for Ascot and that’s where he’ll go, providing he doesn’t have any blips in the next few weeks.
Hughie Morrison
Morrison admits the marathon journey around Ascot is never guaranteed to suit a horse, he feels all the signs are there that Vent De Force will appreciate the stamina test.
“You never know if they’ll stay two-and-a-half miles in a truly-run race, and you only find out when they run in the Gold Cup,” he added.
“But he’s got a rounded shaped belly that makes him look fat, we had one a few years ago like that and what they can do is fill their lungs up and go again about three-quarters of a mile out.”
Betting…
Vent De Force is currently 10/1 to win the Ascot Gold Cup with Dermot Weld’s Forgotten Rules 9/4 .and Michael Owen’s Brown Panther 7/1

Saturday’s John Of Gant Stakes Haydock Timeform
1.25 Download New Racing UK iPad App Handicap (4) 1¼m95y
Timeform Top Rated:
96p 14. MARMOT Roger Charlton Graham Lee
93 10. WINTERVAL Luca Cumani Adam Kirby
93 12. BANDITRY Michael Bell Non Runner
Analyst’s Verdict:
Lingfield maiden winner Marmot looks the way to go in a competitive 3-y-o handicap, as he can only improve further with the longer trip in his favour. Winterval, who will be suited by a return to this distance, is feared most, while Serene Beauty and Wajeeh are respected, also.
2.00 888Sport Pinnacle Stakes (Group 3) (1) 1m3f200y
Timeform Top Rated:
125 10. TALMADA Roger Varian William Buick
124 5. KLEO Luca Cumani Adam Kirby
122 9. QUEEN OF ICE William Haggas Pat Cosgrave
Analyst’s Verdict:
Talmada benefited from an astute tactical ride when runner-up in Group 2 company at York on reappearance 16 days ago, but that shouldn’t be held against her as it’s still the best form on offer. Queen of Ice is a very likeable filly, while Kleo has to be respected even though she has her stamina to prove.
2.35 Timeform Jury Stakes (John of Gaunt) (Group 3) (1) 7f
Timeform Top Rated:
135 8. CABLE BAY Charles Hills Jamie Spencer
133 4. ALJAMAAHEER Roger Varian Paul Hanagan
132 7. BRETON ROCK David Simcock Martin Lane
Analyst’s Verdict:
Cable Bay appears to have returned an improved performer this term and is taken to confirm Lockinge superiority over a couple of these rivals. Breton Rock wasn’t far behind the selection at Newbury and can match last year’s second place in this race, while That Is The Spirit made all in a C&D listed event earlier in the month and is well drawn to attack again from the 1 stall.
3.10 888Sport Achilles Stakes (Listed) (1) 5f
Top Rated:
131 1. PRETEND Charlie Appleby William Buick
130 6. MUSIC MASTER Henry Candy Fergus Sweeney
129 7. OUT DO David O’Meara Daniel Tudhope
Analyst’s Verdict:
Pretend has looked potentially high class on AW in recent months and his pedigree suggests he can be as effective on turf. Music Master wasn’t far off the best sprinters last year and should prove better for his return, while the progressive Out Do is well worth his place at this level.
3.45 888Sport Sandy Lane Stakes (Group 2) (1) 6f
Timeform Top Rated:
138p 5. LIMATO Henry Candy Graham Lee
132 7. MATTMU Tim Easterby David Allan
128p 1. ADAAY William Haggas Paul Hanagan
Analyst’s Verdict:
Limato was Timeform’s highest-rated juvenile male of 2014 and he gave every indication that he’s trained on well with a smooth success in a Group 3 at Ascot on return. Mattmu ran a cracker against his elders when only just denied in a Group 2 at York on return and is the obvious threat, with Adaay best of the others.
4.20 Racing UK Anywhere Available Now Handicap (4) 6f
Timeform Top Rated:
105p 3. DON’T TOUCH Richard Fahey Paul Hanagan
103 8. RED TYCOON David Barron Pat Dobbs
100 5. MYTHMAKER Bryan Smart Graham Lee
Analyst’s Verdict:
Don’t Touch looked potentially useful when easily making a winning start at Newcastle earlier in the month and is worth siding with to follow up, possibly at the expense of Seve, who made a pleasing start to handicaps when close up at York recently and will likely be suited by the step up to 6f. Star Citizen may prove best of the remainder if ready to roll on his reappearance.
4.55 Walsh Ibs Handicap (4) 1m
Timeform Top Rated:
99 1. SHAHDAROBA David O’Meara Daniel Tudhope
98 14. MFIFTYTHREEDOTCOM Richard Fahey Paul Hanagan
97 15. JANAAB Tim Easterby David Allan
Analyst’s Verdict:
It hasn’t taken David O’Meara long to find the key to Shahdaroba and a 2 lb rise doesn’t look enough to stop him given he was successful off higher marks earlier in his career. Illusive chased home the selection at Nottingham and is likely to be in the thick of things again, while We’ll Shake Hands has a C&D win to his name this term and has shaped as if still in good form at Hamilton since.
