The season is approaching Christmas and to say there haven’t been surprise packages is an understatement; here’s a review of the ‘surprise’ Top 3 performance to date.
Arsenal
Arsenal have shot out of the blocks and it goes to show what happens when you marry admirable footballing principles with a few astute signings.
Ozil’s arrival has made them unrecognisable from the soft touches last year….hopefully the setback against old boy Van Persie is just a blip.
Arsenal have been fortunate Olivier Giroud has been healthy this season because injury to the goal scoring Frenchman would mean manager Arsene Wenger is forced to play Nicklas Bendtner.
However, the show stopper at present is the form of 22-year-old Aaron Ramsey. The midfielder is the Gooner’s top scorer and was the match winner in the crucial Champions League win in Dortmund.
On current form, he is one of the best players in Europe.
Liverpool
Suarez and Sturridge have also gelled beyond belief and like the Gooners, have been quick out of the traps with praise been gushing forth towards the pair.
Should they continue with their impressive displays then it’s likely their top four dreams could become a reality this term. Brendan Rodgers philosophy is, “When you’ve got the ball 65-70 per cent of the time it’s a football death for the other team,”
However, they need a game plan to beat like-minded opponents, They have already struggled against Swansea and Arsenal and they must learn to adapt their style in these situations.
The midfield looks and is short on goals thus far and Coutinho looks key. The Reds started the season in blistering form but after Coutinho injured his shoulder against Swansea their form noticeably dipped.
A loss to Southampton and a draw with Newcastle followed as they got used to life without the Brazilian playmaker. His first full start since returning from the sidelines saw them thrash Fulham 4-0 at Anfield.
If he stays fit, then along with Gerrard will be able to provide Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge with all the ammunition they need.
Southampton
Pochettino has been a revellation after the questionable succession to Nigel Adkins. We advocated Saints pre-season with a -34 point handicap at 15/1 for a top 4 finish and that’s looking safe!
The resurgence on the south coast from Southampton has been something to behold. Pochettino has improved every aspect of the squad. From the quality of playing staff to the system they use on the pitch, everything has been changed.
The Saints are now an aggressive, high-pressing, high-tempo machine. The new tactics have seen the Saints win at Anfield and draw at Old Trafford so far. They have completed the most fouls this season with 276, showing their new tenacious work ethic.
They are playing exciting football with a fantastic work ethic and with a superb British bias towards the squad. Where do they keep unearthing these gems from in their academy?
The Saints are currently riding high in the Premier League and have seen the likes of Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana earn England call-ups.
They also boast a host of promising youngsters, with full-back Luke Shaw and winger James Ward-Prowse becoming regulars in both the Premier League and England’s Under-21 set-up.
Keep it up Saints!!!
