Murray in straight sets
It was Andy Murray in straight sets last night with the Scot having a relatively straight forward victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The Scot won 7-5 7-5 6-4 at Flushing Meadows extending his run of appearances in Grand Slam quarter-finals to four years.
No 8 seed Murray will be boosted by triumphing over the ninth-seeded Frenchman, who has had a very strong summer. Tsonga beat Murray three weeks ago in Toronto and had high hopes of improving upon his 2-9 record against the Scot here.
However, Murray’s serve and returns proved to be too hot to handle for Tsonga as he dropped just three service points in the first set.
A poor drop shot in the second set nearly let Tsonga back in, but he rallied quickly and generated a second break-back point. Murray converted, secured his next service game and when Tsonga showed weakness, he pounced to claim the set.
Murray fell behind at the start of the third set but broke in game four, forcing a wayward backhand shot from Tsonga. The Frenchman was tiring at this stage and gave the match to Murray when he double faulted twice to give the Brit a 0-30 lead in a poor service game.
The Scot made no mistake converting from there to defeat his opponent.
Murray will now face Novak Djokovic hoping to beat a top-10 player for the first time since he triumphed over the Serb in the final of Wimbledon last year.
