Today’s Racing News
Richard Hannon believes the opening day at Royal Ascot will be “massive” for his team’s prospects during the most important week of the season to date.
With three Group 1 contests on the opening afternoon of the meeting, Hannon is targeting his share of the prize money on offer and he has high hopes for the first of those top level contests.
The Queen Anne Stakes is the curtain raiser and Hannon will be represented by Lockinge first and second Night Of Thunder and Toormore.
The gauntlet is set to be thrown down by French raider Solow and Hong Kong superstar Able Friend and Hannon says day one will be vital.
“The first day will be a massive day – the Coventry, the Queen Anne, the Windsor Castle. It’s a big day for us,
“In the Queen Anne we’ve got Night Of Thunder and Toormore. That’s going to be a very good race.”
Last year’s 2000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder opened his campaign with victory in the Lockinge and that form received a timely boost when Arod, third at Newbury, enjoyed a smooth success at Epsom in the Diomed Stakes on Oaks Day.
Betting…
Night of Thunder 6.00
Solow 2.62
Able Friend 3.0
In the second race on day one, Log Out Island 6.0 is targeting the Coventry Stakes as Hannon attempts to get Royal Ascot off to a fast start.

Today’s Newbury Timeform…
2.20 Be Wiser Insurance Maiden Stakes (4) 6f110y
Timeform Top Rated:
90p 12. PAPA LUIGI Richard Hannon Ryan Moore
Analyst’s Verdict:
Richard Hannon has won this with Toronado and Estidhkaar in 2 of the last 3 seasons and can strike again with Papa Luigi, whose experience should count for plenty after a promising introduction at Nottingham. Mithqaal and House of Commons both cost plenty at the sales and look the pick of the newcomers before market clues.
2.50 Crossland EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (4) 1¼m6y
Timeform Top Rated:
105 3. GOLD SANDS James Tate Luke Morris
102 6. LA BOHEME Luca Cumani Adam Kirby
101 5. JOURNEY John Gosden Frankie Dettori
Analyst’s Verdict:
Gold Sands ran as well as could be expected when fourth in a C&D listed event on her latest start, and returning to maiden company, she looks the one to side with. La Boheme and Journey are leading dangers, whilst market support for newcomers Heartless and Princessofthestars would need to be viewed positively.
3.25 Lord Weinstock Memorial EBF Stallions Stakes (Ballymacoll Stud) (Listed) (1) 1¼m6y
Timeform Top Rated:
113 3. ENCORE L’AMOUR David Simcock Ryan Moore
109 9. MISS GILER John Gosden Frankie Dettori
108 4. HOT SAUCE John Joseph Murphy Jimmy Fortune
Analyst’s Verdict:
Irish Oaks entrant Speedy Boarding confirmed debut promise at Goodwood on return and remains open to significant improvement upped in class. Hot Sauce, Namhroodah and Encore L’amour are others to consider.
4.00 Al Basti Equiworld Handicap (4) 1m
Timeform Top Rated:
97 7. BERKELEY VALE Roger Teal Ryan Moore
96 9. HECTOR’S CHANCE Heather Main Martin Lane
95 6. GRACIOUS GEORGE Jimmy Fox Pat Dobbs
Analyst’s Verdict:
Berkeley Vale has looked an improved model this term, posting a career best fitted with a visor at Lingfield last month. A 7 lb rise may not be enough to stop the follow-up under Ryan Moore. Hector’s Chance and Mister Musicmaster are possible threats.
4.30 Be Wiser Insurance Handicap (5) 7f
Timeform Top Rated:
90 7. PRESSURE Clive Cox Adam Kirby
89 9. JAGANORY Christopher Mason Edward Greatrex (7)
88 1. SUGAR LUMP Richard Hannon Tom Marquand (7)
Analyst’s Verdict:
On The Huh responded well to the fitting of a visor when runner-up in a Doncaster handicap in May and looks sure to make another bold bid if the headgear continues to have the same effect. Jaganory, Sugar Lump, and Pressure are others worth considering.
5.05 Insure Wiser Handicap (5) 1½m5y
Timeform Top Rated:
86p 13. STRAIT OF MAGELLAN Michael Bell Hayley Turner
85p 11. CHRISTMAS HAMPER Sir Michael Stoute Ryan Moore
85p 9. KERRYMERRY Ismail Mohammed Martin Harley
Analyst’s Verdict:
Mr Bissto made a fair start to life in handicaps, despite finding the test inadequate, when third over 10f at Nottingham in April. He possesses plenty of scope and this stiffer test should see him in an even better light. Penalised pair Strait of Magellan and Kerrymerry are entitled to make their presence felt again, as is fellow recent winner Christmas Hamper.
5.35 Wiser Academy Gentleman Amateur Riders’ Handicap (5) 1¼m6y
Timeform Top Rated:
87 4. PURPLE LANE Graham Mays Mr J. Doe (5)
85 3. SWORD OF THE LORD Nigel Twiston-Davies Mr S. Walker
84 2. HALLINGHAM Jonathan Portman Mr J. Harding (3)
Analyst’s Verdict:
Hallingham wasn’t seen to best effect at Sandown on his latest start, but his previous effort was a respectable reappearance so he gets the narrow vote in an open amateur event. Automotive who has taken this race in each of the last two years, is feared, whilst Sword of The Lord is potentially well-treated if building on his recent Chepstow fourth.
