Racing News
Roswell House trainer Dermot Weld (pictured) has earmarked Dante Stakes winner Golden Horn as the horse to fear in next month’s Epsom Derby.
Weld will saddle Zawraq for the season’s premier Classic but he feels John Gosden’s Dante winner is now the number one contender for Epsom glory.
“I thought Golden Horn was very impressive and he’s going to be very hard to beat but we’re very confident with the way our horse is training.”
Dermot Weld
Golden Horn recorded an impressive victory at York last week to propel himself into the Derby picture and is currently priced 2/1 to win at Epsom.
Zawraq meanwhile has swerved a potential run in the Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh and will go straight to Epsom. Weld is unconcerned by the recent setback for Zawraq.
“Everyone knows he had a little hold up but he’s coming back now nice and quietly. Epsom is still a few weeks away yet but he’s progressing nicely,” he said.
Zawraq’s win at Leopardstown in a 2000 Guineas Trial in April was a standout performance in the early-season sparring ahead of the Derby.
That victory came over a mile and Weld said the performance of Golden Horn over 12 furlongs at York was eye-catching. However, he is confident that his charge will be ready to roll on 6th June.

2.00 British Stallion Studs EBF winner.co.uk Maiden Stakes (5) 6f15y
Top Rated:
88p 10. SHANGHAI GLORY Charles Hills Ryan Moore
79 2. CITY OF STARS Michael Appleby Andrew Mullen
Analyst’s Verdict:
Shanghai Glory can put his experience to good use and confirm the promise of his Windsor debut third, but there are plenty of potentially interesting newcomers in against him from leading yards and the market is sure to be informative, with Majdool and Hyaline a couple who look likely types on paper.
2.30 Bet & Watch At winner.co.uk Handicap (Qualifier) (5) 6f15y
Timeform Top Rated:
90p 9. GERRARD’S SLIP Bryan Smart David Nolan
89 4. SECRET SPIRIT Clive Cox Adam Kirby
88 13. PENNY DREADFUL Scott Dixon Luke Morris
Analyst’s Verdict:
Marasim was an eycatcher at Pontefract last time and can make a successful start to life in handicaps. Secret Spirit went close on her Doncaster reappearance and won’t be far away if turning up in similar form, while Mountain Man looked an improved performer when first past the post on his course reappearance and has what could be a handy draw near the rail.

Timeform Top Rated:
91 6. HOT SPICE Michael Easterby Jamie Spencer
90 8. FREDERIC CHOPIN Michael Appleby Andrew Mullen
88 2. MR SNOOZY Mark Walford Alistair Rawlinson (5)
Analyst’s Verdict:
Frederic Chopin made a promising start for the Mick Appleby team at Goodwood and is taken to build on that and resume winning ways back up in trip. The reliable Hurry Home Poppa is likely to give it another good shot, while Shades of Silver arrives on the back of a fine second last time.

Timeform Top Rated:
92p 6. ELLE SHADE John Gosden Nicky Mackay
90p 5. CARTIER David Simcock Jim Crowley
90 1. TRIPLE DIP Mark Johnston Silvestre De Sousa
Analyst’s Verdict:
Serene Beauty is bred to be very useful and could have plenty of improvement in her after overcoming greenness to justify short-priced favouritism on her debut in March. Cartier, Elle Shade and Melodious are others who have the potential for better in what looks a competitive heat despite a smallish field.
4.00 Breeders Backing Racing EBF winner.co.uk Maiden Stakes (5) 1m75y
Timeform Top Rated:
91 5. MAYBE DEFINITELY Martyn Meade Fergus Sweeney
80 1. FIELD OF LIGHT Ed Dunlop Chad Schofield
67P 2. GRAND INQUISITOR Sir Michael Stoute Ryan Moore
Analyst’s Verdict:
Grand Inquisitor shaped a lot better than the result on last month’s Newbury debut and is taken to leave that bare form well behind and get off the mark at the second time of asking. The John Gosden newcomer Baqqa is the pick of Paul Hanagan from the Hamdan Al Maktoum trio and is a probable threat, while Maybe Definitely arrives on the back of a recent second at Doncaster.
4.30 Bet & Watch At winner.co.uk Classified Stakes (5) 1m75y
Timeform Top Rated:
93 3. CHAMPAGNE BOB Tom Dascombe Richard Kingscote
91p 8. MOONADEE Michael Appleby Andrew Mullen
91 10. VALE OF IRON John Best Kieren Fox
Analyst’s Verdict:
Moonadee ran a cracker on his first start for Michael Appleby at Doncaster recently, and given his unexposed profile, gets the nod in a very open classified event. Parish rates a likely improver on the back of 3 promising efforts in maidens and is feared, along with Mahsooba who may well benefit from the application of blinkers.

Top Rated:
86 5. ALPHA DELTA WHISKY John Gallagher Tom Queally
85 2. BOLD SPIRIT Declan Carroll I. J. Brennan
84 3. WHERE THE BOYS ARE Ed McMahon Paul Hanagan
Analyst’s Verdict:
Where The Boys Are found only one too good on return at Pontefract last month, and she may well have more to offer as a 4-y-o. Alpha Delta Whisky is potentially well handicapped and feared most, ahead of Gulland Rock, who is more than capable when putting it all together.

Timeform Top Rated:
86 6. HUMOUR Christine Dunnett Adam Kirby
85 2. HARROGATE FAIR Michael Squance Robert Tart
85 8. MOSSGO John Best Kieren Fox
Analyst’s Verdict:
Humour wasn’t seen to anything like best effect over C&D earlier this month, and having opened his account at Wolverhampton previously, he gets the nod to bounce back with Kirby back in the plate. Oil Strike, New Leyf and Harrogate Fair make up the shortlist.
