Paddy Power Gold Cup latest
Topweight Finian’s Rainbow will take his chance at Cheltenham in Saturday’s Paddy Power Gold Cup, although a decision on big-race favourite Dynaste’s participation has yet to be made.
Champion trainer Nicky Henderson has been debating the choice of Saturday’s 2m4½f handicap, for which the sponsors make Finian’s Rainbow a 14-1 chance, or the Listed Schloer Chase over two miles the following day.
The drying conditions at Prestbury Park have swayed the Seven Barrows team to choose Saturday’s £160,000 contest, which will be Finian’s Rainbow’s first run since undergoing a breathing operation.
Having spoken to owner Michael Buckley on Wednesday, Henderson told the Racing Post: “Finian’s runs in the Paddy Power on Saturday.”
Although Henderson’s decision has brought some much-needed clarity to the ante-post picture for the biggest race of the jumps season so far, uncertainty on Wednesday night continued to surround the Cheltenham participation of Dynaste.
Trainer David Pipe will leave it until Thursday’s declaration stage before deciding whether to go down the Paddy Power route with his 5-1 market leader or wait for Haydock’s Betfair Chase.
The latest going report from Cheltenham describes the ground as good, good to soft in places, and the weather forecast is largely dry. The cross-country course, which will be used for the first time this season on Friday, is currently good after watering.
Interestingly, one horse who had been targeted for the Paddy Power has decided to skip it in favour of two smaller hurdle races. QUESTIONS ANSWERED who scored at Limerick on Sunday, goes to Clonmel 13.55 with just a 4lb penalty. The flat AWT season comes from Southwell and Kempton Park today and we have a couple of selections.
