Premier League Previews: Jan 18th
This weekends Premier League Previews kicks off at the Stadium Of Light with a re-energised Sunderland entertaining high flying Saints…..all Saturday (15:00 unless stated)
Sunderland v Southampton (12:45)
Sunderland have drawn six of their last 10 home matches against middle-third opposition with seven of those games providing fewer than three goals. The Black Cats have picked up the fewest home points this season (7) but have lost only once in their last six (W2-D3-L1) games home and away.
Southampton have won just one of their last seven Premier League away games, but have opened the scoring in five of their last nine trips to bottom-six teams. There have been no more than two goals in 12 of Southampton’s last 15 away games, with eight of the last 11 meetings between these two also providing fewer than three goals.
Arsenal v Fulham
This encounter sees the joint best defence against the worst defence. Arsenal have responded to their three-game winless run by putting together a four-game winning streak. They have won their last eight home matches against bottom-six clubs. The only time the Gunners have had a better return at this stage of the season was during the unbeaten campaign of 2003/04.
Fulham have lost nine of their last 11 away matches against top-six teams, eight of which were L/L double results. Only ManCity and Liverpool have averaged more match goals than the Cottagers (3.24 GPG). They have lost seven of their last nine on the road and conceded 20 in their last six Premier League matches. Fulham have shipped 11 more goals than any other club and have failed to win in 27 trips to Arsenal, picking up just five draws in the process.
Crystal Palace v Stoke
This game sees Tony Pulis host his former club, and as with Stoke, goals at CrystalPalace have been hard to come by. Their goals tally of 13 after 21 games is the lowest in the league, and fourth lowest in Premier League history after this many games. There have been fewer than three goals in seven of their 10 league matches.
After their seven match unbeaten home run was bought to an end Stoke will be hoping to end an eight match winless away run. No team has picked up fewer away points than Stoke (5). The Potters have had less than three goals in eight of their past nine away games with bottom-six clubs, with five of the matches heading into the break goalless.
Manchester City v Cardiff
Manchester City have won all 10 home league games this season with eight W/W double results. They have scored 38 goals at home this season, five more than any other team in Premier League history after 10 home games. They have won by two or more goals in eight of their 10 games, and have won 15 of their previous 16 home encounters with bottom-six teams.
Cardiff have failed to win their last seven away fixtures, losing five. The Bluebirds have failed to net in five of their last six away league matches, but did shock City earlier in the season. So far this season Cardiff have the worst first-half record (W1-D11-L9) and have picked up fewer points in their last six games than any other side (1).
Bet: Man City (-2.5) Asian Handicap @ 2.15
Norwich v Hull
Norwich have gone into the break deadlocked in six of their 10 home fixtures this season. The Canaries have had fewer than three goals in six of their last eight home matches against middle-third teams, with five of these matches providing no more than just a solitary goal.
Hull have lost seven of their 10 away matches, losing five by two or more goals. They have won just one of their 10 away games against bottom-six opponents, losing six. Only Villa and CrystalPalace have averaged fewer match goals than Hull (2.33 GPG).
Bet: Norwich win by one goal @ 4.05
West Ham v Newcastle Utd
West Ham claimed an impressive win last weekend, but it was their first in eight attempts. West Ham have kept nine clean sheets this season, no club has kept more. The Hammers struggle to hold onto leads though, having thrown away a league high 14 points from winning positions this season. The Hammers should be able to call upon Andy Carroll this weekend, since he joined the club they have a 36{70aeb3532cb26dbe277d25ea128ebb74de84b9bd22e1583b0eb1b73768e061f6} win rate when he starts compared to just 20{70aeb3532cb26dbe277d25ea128ebb74de84b9bd22e1583b0eb1b73768e061f6} otherwise.
Newcastle have lost three games in a row for the first time since the start of last year – they haven’t lost four in a row since November 2012. Furthermore, they’ve failed to score in those three matches, their longest drought of the season. However, there have been at least three goals in seven of the Magpies previous nine games with bottom-six sides.
Liverpool v Aston Villa (17:30)
Liverpool’s home record has kept their slim title hopes alive with nine wins from their 10 matches. They tend to kill teams off early with the best first-half record in the league and 10 W/W results in 11 home matches. Furthermore, with the attacking talents at their disposal in Sturridge (10 goals) and top scorer Suarez (22) they have won by two or more goals in eight of their last 11 home matches against middle-third opposition.
As poor as Villa have been at home this season, they have been pretty decent on the road winning four and losing just three of their 10 away matches. Furthermore, they have suffered just one Anfield defeat in their last four visits, picking up two victories. However, they have lost seven of their last eight away matches against top-six sides.
Bet: Liverpool Win First Half with (-1.0) Asian Handicap @ 2.20
Sunday
Swansea v Tottenham (13:30)
Defeat at Old Trafford was the Swans fourth in five outings. Moreover, Swansea have won just two of their 15 home Premier League games. Swansea have drawn the first half in 12 of their last 20 home matches.
Tottenham have picked up under new boss Tim Sherwood, only ManCity have picked up more points in their last six games than Spurs (16). Only Arsenal have picked up more away points this season than their North London rivals (22). Spurs have won six of their last 10 away encounters with middle-third clubs and have gone in level at half-time in 11 of their last 17 away matches.
Chelsea v Manchester United (16:00)
Chelsea are keeping hot on the heels of the top two with four wins on the spin. They have also made StamfordBridge a fortress once more with Mourinho’s return, winning nine of their 10 matches. There have been at least three goals in seven of their last nine home matches against top-half teams and 21 goals scored in four meetings between the two at Stamford Bridge.
Man United, despite recent home woes, have been decent on the road (W6-D2-L2) where they are unbeaten in their last seven. However, they have failed to score in their last three meetings with Chelsea in all competitions. David Moyes is still yet to win at any of Arsenal, Chelsea, or Liverpool. The Red Devils have conceded first in five of their last 10 trips to top-six clubs and have had at least three goals in nine of their last 11 away games.

Monday
West Brom v Everton
This is a battle of the draw specialists. No team has drawn more games than the Baggies (9) or the Toffees (8) this season. West Brom have lost six of their last 10 home games against top-six teams. Despite an impressive win over Newcastle in their last home fixture, they haven’t won back to back home encounters since March.
Everton have scored just one first-half away goal this season and gone in level eight times. They have won three of their last four away matches against middle-third sides – all of which were goalless at half-time. The Toffees have suffered fewer defeats than any other team (2) so far this campaign and have the joint meanest defence (19).
Bet: Everton (-0.25) Asian Handicap @ 1.95
