Racing Post Trophy

Racing-Post-Trophy-2014

Aidan O’Brien has six of the 13 entries in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday. O’Brien has often used this to push his best youngster with St Nicholas Abbey, Camelot and Kingsbarns all been down that route in the last five years.

The Ballydoyle handler has won the Doncaster Group One on seven occasions and Aloft, Giovanni Canaletto, Hans Holbein, Jacobean, Order of St George and Royal Navy Ship are all possibles at the six-day stage.

A total of 13 runners are entered at the five-day stage, so let’s deal with the O’Brien runners. O’Brien reportedly favours Royal Navy Ship and Giovanni Canaletto for the race and those two are among the most interesting of his squad, along with Jacobean.

Royal Navy Ship and Jacobean already have previous, meeting at the Curragh last week on what was a debut run for both. Jacobean shaping better than Royal Navy Ship and prevailed by a length and a half on the day.

There are obvious doubts about a horse too raw to do himself justice on debut winning a Group 1 just 13 days on, but should Jacobean to be declared and remain around 9.0, we’d be interested, so it’s watch and see on Thursday?

Giovanni Canaletto was just third on his debut, six lengths behind winner Mohaayed. It was a strong race and there’s plenty of promise in his pedigree, brother to Derby winner Ruler of The World.

The British runners are headed up by Elm Park and Celestial Path. The former being the only one in the field to have proved himself at Group level when winning the Royal Lodge, however at 3.3 offers little value.

Celestial Path is typical of Sir Mark Prescott….campaigned aggressively, won a good maiden on debut, then followed that with a listed. He’s a Derby entrant and at 7.0 is not bad value.

Restorer has a similar profile to  a certain Kingston Hill, last years emphatic winner. He ran a decent race behind Commemorative in the Autumn Stakes and looks greta value at a double digit 17.0 .

Hopefully the furore and press about the O’Brien runners will hold the price out for a nice each way bet?
