Rock On Ruby Ready for Aintree
Today’s Bank Holiday Monday racing news has trainer Harry Fry declaring ROCK ON RUBY is raring to go for next week’s Aintree Festival.
The former Champion Hurdle winner was forced to miss his intended run in the World Hurdle at Cheltenham last month but Fry confirms he is now on track and ready to go to Liverpool.
Ten-year-old Rock On Ruby holds entries in both the 2m4f Aintree Hurdle and the 3m Liverpool Hurdle. Should he run in the former he could face his old nemesis Hurricane Fly along with another Willie Mullins runner, Arctic Fire.
Rock On Ruby took the Champion Hurdle crown from Hurricane Fly in 2012 only for the Irish star to regain it 12 months later. Fry confirmed Rock On Ruby had been on a course of antibiotics once it was clear he would miss Cheltenham and he is now back in sparkling form at home.
“This morning Noel Fehily came down to sit on him and was clearly delighted with his well-being,
“We feel that Ruby is back on his A-game which is good news with Aintree round the corner.” Harry Fry
The Liverpool Hurdle could feature a rematch between the principles from Cheltenham’s World Hurdle.
Our winning selection from Cheltenham, COLE HARDEN is 11/4 to once more repel the challenge of the Paul Nicholls duo Saphir De Rheu (6/1) and Zarkandar (5/2) who followed him home at Prestbury Park.
Fry will decide early in the week whether to pitch Rock On Ruby in amongst them or remain at the intermediate trip for the Aintree Hurdle.
Tomorrow’s feature…..
Ruby Walsh believes he has a strong chance of landing a third Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on the Willie Mullins trained PERFECT GENTLEMAN.
Walsh first rode the winner of the Easter Monday feature in 2000 on Commanche Court, trained by his father, Ted. Five years later he partnered the Martin Brassil trained Numbersixvalverde to success –with that runner going on to land the Aintree National a year later under Niall ‘Slippers’ Madden.
Walsh has ridden the ten-year-old Perfect Gentleman just once before, when they comfortably took the honours in a Grade Three chase at Cork in November.
He believes the 10/1 chance has the ‘right profile’ for success at Fairyhouse today.
“I think he has the right profile for the race and 10st 10lbs is a lovely weight,
“He ran a blinder in the four-miler in Cheltenham. He was prominent all the way and probably just got run out of it close home. He jumps really well.
“It’s a competitive race but I think a novice might win it, something like Lots Of Memories or Perfect Gentleman,
“A lot of the handicappers in it are exposed and plenty of them want better ground than we’re likely to get.” Ruby Walsh
At Cheltenham last month Perfect Gentleman had Patrick Mullins in the saddle and they were jostling for the lead coming to the final fence before weakening up the hill in a race won by Cause Of Causes.
Walsh admits he will require some luck on the day but he says Perfect Gentleman has the scope for a big run. He is not put off by any perceived lack of experience for a horse with only five starts over fences behind him. According to Walsh, the race could be set up for a novice victory.
Tomorrow’s Irish Grand National betting…..
Perfect Gentleman is 10/1 whilst, Lots Of Memories is 16/1 for the Irish Grand National and AP McCoy’s mount Cantlow is 9/1 .
