Santa Anita Breeders Cup update 2013

Breeders’ Cup Turf favourite The Fugue pleased her travelling team as she enjoyed a routine breeze at Santa Anita.

A luckless third on her previous visit to California, when a hot favourite for last year’s Filly & Mare Turf, John Gosden’s four-year-old will this time take on the colts over the longer distance of a mile and a half.

She has enjoyed an excellent campaign in Europe this year, winning the Yorkshire Oaks and the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, and arrived in America on Monday night.

Taking to the track at 6.45am, just as dawn was breaking, The Fugue sported four bright blue protective bandages on her legs and a distinctive black breast girth.

She enjoyed a gentle jog in the hands of Gary Forster, and Gosden’s travelling head lad, Les Reynolds, expressed his satisfaction afterwards.

Reynolds said: “We took her on to the main track, where she just jogged around for a circuit, which is the same routine as when she was here last year. She then went round the paddock a couple of times.

“We’re very happy with her. She shipped in great and we’re delighted with the way she’s travelled. She was very alert when she got into the barn last night.”

Gosden is expected to arrive at Santa Anita on Wednesday morning, with big-race pilot William Buick due in on the same day.

Breeders Cup Entries

A nice 20/1 advised EW second yesterday from our two selections, so nice profits to kick the week off following Monday’s wash-out

Carlisle 15.15…..MAKHZOON maybe the answer here after blowing away the cobwebs at Perth last month. He’s proven at the distance and on going from soft to heavy….. good EW value at a current 16/1 with PaddyPower. Ballyben could be the main danger who has form at this class and isn’t penalised for his last win and a best priced 7/1 with bet365.

Nottingham 14.00…..Amulet will be a hot favourite after making all and an impressive 9l on soft ground at Newbury last Friday and should be upto defying a 6lb penalty but at no value whatsoever. We’ll go for an EW on FIRST POST, a definite ‘softie’ lover and is proven at this class (6 wins from 29) and has bang in form Oisin Murphy in the hot seat….a best priced 15/2 with Bet Victor and for you favourite backers Amulet is best priced 11/8 with Bet Butler.
