Saturday Racing News: 1st March 2014
It’s good to report today that our selection yesterday, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY, has just finished the race…..next week he will be running fitted with headlamps….apologies for that!
Two going today for but first some racing news on the build up to Cheltenham…..
The weights have been revealed for the 11 handicaps that will take place during the Cheltenham Festival…
Among the most hotly-anticipated handicap marks was that of Ted Veale, last year’s impressive County Hurdle winner who was entered in the Grand Annual Chase (as well as the Arkle and the County Hurdle). He has been given a rating that’s equivalent to 146, 12 lb higher than the hurdles mark he shouldered to last year’s County Hurdle.
Saturday’s unlucky Kempton Park Chase runner-up Bury Parade, entered in both the three-mile Festival Handicap Chase and the shorter Byrne Group Plate, has been handed a rise of 4 lb for his Kempton effort. Triolo d’Alene and Houblon des Obeaux, both Gold Cup entrants, share top weight for the three-mile race while Wishfull Thinking tops the handicap for the Byrne Group Plate.
The novice handicap chase, which again closes the first day of the Festival, has thrown up some of the more interesting pieces of handicapping. Cause of Causes, runner-up in a valuable handicap at Leopardstown over Christmas, has been deemed inside the ceiling of the 0-140 handicap. Pendra, who like Cause of Causes races in the colours of Festival mainstay JP McManus, is in off 137, 2 lb lower than the hurdles mark which saw him the subject of a gamble in last year’s Coral Cup.
Over hurdles, both Dunguib and Fingal Bay, early fancies for the Coral Cup and Pertemps Final respectively, will have to carry top weight in their bids for Festival glory. Medinas, last year’s Coral Cup winner, will have the same burden as former Champion Bumper winner Dunguib.
The full list of entries for the Festival handicaps can be found here.
