Smokey wins….advised @ 8/1

A second win of the season with Charlie Wallis trained SMOKEY at Southwell last night advised 8/1. Claimer Rhys Clutterbuck’s charge managed to hold off the short priced favourite Passional through the final furlong 🙂

Our 2nd selection ran unplaced with Katheefa frustrating again, though Scott Dixon’s Bond Angel offset the loss on that one with a decent 11/1 paying 2nd.

For those on the £1k to £10k Annual Challenge, its currently over a 38% win/place rate and our bank is £8448.54 with an ROI of over 750% and current stakes £105.61 EW

Today’s Selections

Southwell 17.30

Passional looks short enough to take on and we have already enjoyed a nice winner with Charlie Wallis’s SMOKEY.

LTO we went for a follow up at Lingfield and wasn’t that far away when beaten by Capla Spirit when trying to make all.

However, his AW record has 4 wins/9 places from just 12 runs with a treble landed early Autumn. Despite rising from 52-68, looks open to improvement on a surface he should go well on at the first time of asking.

The sires offspring go well here and Rhys Clutterbuck’s takes over from William Carson. With a 7lb claim looks the one of EW interest here. There’s a best 17/2 and 3 paying slots with Hills though a more general 8’s to record this morning.

Southwell 17.30 – Smokey (half stakes challenge)

Southwell 19.00

Karle Burke & Tim Easterby are always of note here. Both operate near 20% win/45% place and noteworthy for EW acca’s.

The latter has Excessable out who looks a sound choice for lumping EW acca’s under Duran Fentiman. However is having to continue his improvement and may find one better handicapped here.

Burke has favourite Lord Oberon going and again sure to give it a good go off the front. Holds a record of 4 from 4 here, that includes a couple of 2018 novices. However, has another 5 to contend with and am happy looking at a decent EW shot.

Looking at a slightly better priced charges, LTO possibly made a poor selection at the 7f trip about KATHEEFA when tempted in by such a big price. That drifted on the day and also panned out in running when 6l of the winner Tadleel who has since followed up.

Nonetheless, raced keenly in mid division and only folded when asked the question at the furlong marker. Rated a mention in our tracker last month when missing the break on last run and then hit subsequent traffic problems.

I’m still of the thinking that Ruth Carr’s string are well handicapped on the back of a woeful start up after that lock down in March. Last February, he was running consistently from mid 80’s to 90 and now dropped to 75 worthy of consideration.

Looking back at his 4 runs at Southwell so far this term has seen 3 improving RPR’s in this grade before hitting some traffic in a C3. However, rallied and stayed on well for 4th that day under Andrew Mullen.

Ruth Carr’s charge has usual whipping boy JPS back up top and there’s a general 12’s and 3 paying slots to record this morning.

Southwell 19.00 – Katheefa (half stakes challenge)

Southwell 19.30

We backed BOND ANGEL LTO in a race that turned into a 7 runner, though would have finished outside the slots in 4th.

However, that was a blanket finish and just a length down on the winning favourite Straightoutacompton and re-opposing Glory Of Paris. Native Silver also finished 3rd in that race who went close for us last week at a price, so the form of that one looks decent.

BOND ANGEL is a multiple winner here for P D Evans and noted on 10th Jan in the tracker when running up a big priced 2nd in a 7 runner C5, just getting caught at the death.

Local handler, Scott Dixon’s runners are always noteworthy at the track. After switching hands, the trainer ran him initially over the 7f trip where 8 looks the optimum. Dropping in grade, today gets a nice wide berth.

Looking at the rest of the field they are all having to do it above last winning marks. Castle Quarter is in our tracker, but just wipes yer face prices and does look better over the 7? Maykir has improved significantly but hasn’t been as good on last two runs and todays mark looks high enough at just lumping EW prices.

Jonathan Fisher is the regular pilot and BOND ANGEL with his excellent track form – especially in the post Christmas period looks a decent EW shout from this draw.

There’s a best 9’s and FOUR SLOTS with Victor & SkyBet but 8’s with Paddy & Betfair this morning for a half stakes play.

Southwell 19.30 – Bond Angel (half stakes challenge)
