Spurs v Liverpool: Match Preview December 2013

Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas says his side are fully aware of what Luis Suarez is capable of ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

Suarez has been enjoying some mesmerising form in the Premier League this season and is currently top of the goalscoring standings with an impressive 15.

The Reds head down to White Hart Lane looking to leapfrog the likes of Everton, Manchester City and Chelsea with three points in the north London.

Keeping Suarez quiet will be key for Spurs and Villas-Boas knows what kind of a threat the Uruguayan is on his current form.

He said: “He’s a player going through a wonderful individual moment.

“He’s full of the confidence. We have to be aware of his strengths. He’s a player that individually can solve the game.

“So we have to be aware not only of the people that feed him but the actual individual moments of brilliance that we saw this season, that have been so decisive for Liverpool. “He’s a key player for them and very difficult to stop.”

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas will assess the fitness of Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen, who returned from injury lay-offs on Thursday against Anzhi Makhachkala. Jan Vertonghen is out with an ankle injury, while Vlad Chiriches (knee) and Younes Kaboul (thigh) are doubts.

Liverpool are without the injured Steven Gerrard but Jordan Henderson has overcome a badly bruised ankle. Daniel Agger returns after missing the win over West Ham because of illness.

MATCH PREVIEW

After their autumn dip, Tottenham seem to be back in form with an unbeaten run of five games but if they are to genuinely challenge for a top-four place they need to improve their home results.

They’ve won just one of their last five league matches at White Hart Lane and scored only seven goals in as many games.

Roberto Soldado’s midweek hat-trick against Anzi Makhachkala in Europe came on the back of the Spaniard being dropped for the previous two league games.

“This next month will give Liverpool an indication of how difficult it is going to be to replace Steven Gerrard when his playing days are over.

“Meanwhile, Tottenham have turned the corner. There was a massive over-reaction to their 6-0 defeat at Manchester City and, if you look at their performances and results since then, they have come good.”

Tottenham haven’t seen the best out of the £26m striker yet, but the service to him has been poor.

Part of the problem seems to stem from Andre Villas-Boas making so many changes as he tries to assimilate the new signings. They made a cracking start to the campaign by playing more of a settled side.

Tottenham can be backed at 12/5 to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool and are 9/1 to edge the crunch clash 1-0.

7/4 to win the Premier League title outright this season.
