Newcastle United v Liverpool (16.00)
Judging on current form this could be a cricket score…….but stranger things have happened in fooball.
Mike Williamson is Newcastle’s latest injury absentee, having suffered a hamstring problem just days after his recall from a loan at Wolves.
Cheick Tiote has failed to recover from a groin strain in time for Sunday.
Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho, who has missed the last three matches with a hamstring problem, remains a doubt.
Lucas and fit-again Jordan Henderson are vying to replace the suspended Emre Can, while Daniel Sturridge could make his first league start for two months.
Stats…..
- Newcastle’s 1-0 victory in last season’s corresponding fixture is their only triumph against Liverpool in the last six meetings (D1, L4).
- Liverpool have only won one of their last five league games at St James’ Park, albeit by an emphatic 6-0 margin in April 2013.
- Never been a goalless draw between them in 42 Premier League clashes.
- Newcastle have had six players sent off in their last six league games against Liverpool.
- 42 Premier League meetings have produced 132 goals – an average of 3.14 per game.
- The Magpies have conceded two goals or more in 10 of their 14 league matches this season.
- Liverpool have won seven of their last eight league and cup matches.
- They have only lost once in their 11 matches under Jurgen Klopp and conceded just eight goals.
- Daniel Sturridge has scored six goals against Newcastle in the Premier League, more than against any other side.
Liverpool’s impressive form has lifted them to within six points of top spot and looking good on their travels netting 14 goals in their last four games on the road.
Given the Geordies woes and Liverpool’s performances on the road, the visitors should win comfortably here.

Sheff Wednesday v Derby County (13.15)
Disputing league leaders Derby go to Hillborough this afternoon with Wednesday’s Tom Lees likely to miss out due to a hamstring injury picked up against Stoke.
Glenn Loovens and Jack Hunt are both also doubtful, though Darryl Lachman and Claude Dielna will both therefore be in contention along with Fernando Forestieri.
The Rams can call up Bradley Johnson following his suspension at Hull, but two-goal Jacob Butterfield may have thrown a spanner in the works with that performance.
Stats…
- Derby are undefeated in their last 14 matches against Sheff Wed in all competitions. Derby win or draw 1.34
- Derby have kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 7 matches in Championship. Derby win or draw 1.34
- There have been under 2.5 goals scored in Derby’s last 4 games in Championship. Under 2.5 goals 1.67
- Derby have won 5 of their last 6 matches in Championship. Derby win 2.38
- Sheff Wed have seen under 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 6 home matches against Derby in all competitions. Under 2.5 goals 1.67
- There have been over 2.5 goals scored in Sheff Wed’s last 3 games in Championship. Over 2.5 goals 2.15
- Sheff Wed are undefeated in 11 of their last 12 matches in Championship.
Prediction……
Wednesday are only outside the playoff places on goal difference and are still one of the dark horses this season and losing just once at home will fancy their chances.
However, Derby have won five of their last six and are disputing leadership so we just go for a narrow Derby win.
