Sunday Newsletter – 10th February

There’s racing from Punchestown and supporting Timeform below for those interested in a Sunday nibble. Elsewhere, it’s no change until the BHA  update tomorrow.

At Punchestown it’s  €100,000 BoyleSports Grand National Trial Day with Grade 1 winner Don Poli heading a competitive field which also includes last year’s Irish Grand National winner General Principle.

Gordon Elliot has 6 declared from the 17 field  in a bid to follow up on last years win and BoyleSports reward winning connections of Sunday’s feature race with a free entry into the BoyleSports Irish Grand National on Easter Monday.

Shark Hanlon is expecting a big run from Kilkishen who has Mark Enright booked and Hanlon reckons they won’t be far away…

“He will absolutely love the trip. Three miles isn’t far enough for him so going three and a half miles will be perfect and the plan the whole time with him has been to run in an Irish Grand National so if he wins on Sunday he’ll have won a big €100,000 pot and got a free entry into the National as well. With a bit of luck he’d get into the bottom of the weights in the Irish National.”

Tom Scudamore is a notable booking for Henry de Bromhead’s Solomn Grundy who has ran well on his first two outings for the in form Waterford handler. If he stays well over three and a half miles around here it would open up a lot of options for them.

The seven race card kicks of at (13.45) with the P.P Hogan Memorial Cross Country Chase and there’s Timeform below…we’ll post again around 8.00am on Monday morning.

1.45 P.P. Hogan Memorial Cross Country Chase 3m1f

Timeform Top Rated:
154 3. JOSIES ORDERS Enda Bolger M. P. Walsh
151+ 2. BALLYCASEY W. P. Mullins Mr P. W. Mullins
140 8. HURRICANE DARWIN Alan Fleming Donagh Meyler

Analyst’s Verdict:
Josies Orders has established himself in the top echelons of this discipline, and he could well gain compensation for a narrow defeat in this race 12 months ago. Hurricane Darwin was fourth in that aforementioned contest and can go well again, but a bigger threat may emerge in the shape of Ballycasey.

2.20 I.N.H. Stallion Owners European Breeders Fund Novice Hurdle (Listed) 2m

Timeform Top Rated:
145p 2. PRINCE D’AUBRELLE W. P. Mullins R. Walsh
144p 4. SINORIA Henry de Bromhead Rachael Blackmore
143 7. LA SORELITA W. P. Mullins P. Townend

Analyst’s Verdict:
Prince d’Aubrelle clearly isn’t the easiest to train, but he couldn’t be in better hands and is clearly very talented given his record when making it to the track, He looks the way to go, with Chosen Mate the likely danger following an impressive win at Fairyhouse.

2.50 Punchestown Festival Ticket Deal Discount Maiden Hurdle 2½m

Timeform Top Rated:
134p 20. LETHAL STEPS Gordon Elliott Davy Russell
133 8. TAKE REVENGE Martin Brassil D. J. McInerney (3)
129p 13. DISCORDANTLY Mrs J. Harrington Robbie Power

Analyst’s Verdict:
Plenty of depth to this maiden with Discordantly taken to make it fourth time lucky over hurdles after a fine run behind a promising Gigginstown pair at Navan. Take Revenge was a big improver when second over C&D in December and seems sure to be winning races in this sphere, as does Lethal Steps.

3.20 David Trundley Artist At Punchestown Handicap Hurdle 3m

Timeform Top Rated:
125 11. GLOBAL RACING Gavin Patrick Cromwell G. N. Fox
124+ 13. HOWAYA AOIFE Gerard Keane S. G. McDermott
123 6. WEE SMALL HOURS Dermot Anthony McLoughlin D. J. Hand (7)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Global Racing has turned the corner for his new yard and a second C&D win of the year could be on the cards. Treacysenniscorthy appeals as having more to offer and a market move for him would be significant. Load Up Time is another among the dangers.

3.50 Richard Maher Memorial Rated Novice Chase 2m

Timeform Top Rated:
159 5. IMPACT FACTOR Mrs J. Harrington Robbie Power
155 1. DR MIKEY Ms M. Flynn D. J. McInerney (3)
150p 6. RIDERS ONTHE STORM Tom J. Taaffe B. J. Cooper

Analyst’s Verdict:
Impact Factor arrives at the top of his game and this represents a good opportunity for him to open his account in this sphere. Riders Onthe Storm should have more to offer over fences and is next best ahead of Dr Mikey.

4.20 Boylesports Grand National Trial Handicap Chase (Grade B) 3½m150y

Timeform Top Rated:
172 11. FITZHENRY Paul Nolan M. P. Walsh
171 15. KILKISHEN John Joseph Hanlon Sean Bowen
169 10. SOLOMN GRUNDY Henry de Bromhead Tom Scudamore

Analyst’s Verdict:
Fitzhenry produced his best effort to date when third in the Paddy Power Chase at Fairyhouse over Christmas, faring best of those held up, and remains one to keep on the right side of (first-time blinkers fitted here). Solomn Grundy also shaped well in the same race and is another to bear in mind. Some Neck and Kilkishen are others of interest.

4.50 Punchestown Festival 30th April To 4th May (Pro/Am) I.N.H. Flat 2m

Timeform Top Rated:
105 6. BATTLE OF MIDWAY Noel Meade Mr M. J. O’Hare (3)
102 7. CATS FOR CASH Gordon Elliott Ms Lisa O’Neill
95 5. YENDO Gordon Elliott J. R. Wildman (7)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Battle of Midway only just failed to make a winning debut at Fairyhouse on New Year’s Day and sets the standard on that effort. Cats For Cash has finished runner-up on both his starts so far and is the obvious threat, though newcomers Cavalry Master, Robin des Sivola and Reasonable Doubt all need keeping an eye on.
