The Fugue left frustrated in Hong Kong
The Fugue was left frustrated on the world stage as she finished a fast-finishing second to local trained Dominant in the Vase.
Caught in the dying strides of last month’s Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita, The Fugue held a decent early position under William Buick but lost her position at a crucial stage and ended up making her challenger from nearer last than first down the outside.
Dominant, trained by John Moore and Zac Purton, was settled in the last pair early, but enjoyed a clear passage and was allowed to get first run on the luckless runner-up before holding her strong, late challenge close home.
In other races, European big guns Moonlight Cloud and Sky Lantern finished out of the frame as Glorious Days claimed the Longines Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin.
The John Size-trained Glorious Days finished second 12 months ago to Ambitious Dragon, beaten less than a length, and went one place better when powering home to cut down favourite Gold-Fun by three-quarters of a length. Packing Whiz was third, with Gordon Lord Byron fourth for Tom Hogan and William Buick.
Moonlight Cloud looked like she might pick up at the two furlong pole but did not show her trademark acceleration, while Richard Hughes on Sky Lantern was sending out the distress signals turning into the straight. Moonlight Cloud, the winner of six Group One events, was sixth and is now set to be retired.
Our EW shot, SIDE GLANCE in the Hong Kong Cup 8.30 finished out of the frame in the race won by Akeed Mofeed.
Another winner yesterday from our two named, GEORGE FENTON advised at 4/1 in the morning was backed into 11/8 favourite and Hayley Turner came with a perfectly timed late run to get up by a short head. So a great week with our 9 s
