Today’s Racing News
Richard Hannon is pinning his hopes on Night Of Thunder finding some soft ground in order to get the best of the former 2000 Guineas winner.
Night Of Thunder was fifth in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot behind French star Solow, but the champion trainer was not overly disappointed with his effort given that conditions were not in his favour.
He’s better with some give in the ground, there’s no question about that.
Richard Hannon
Hannon believes the race will turn out to be recognised as perhaps the strongest one-mile contest of the year.
“I think it was a very good race, possibly the best mile race we’ll see anywhere in the world this year All the stars were there. He’s better with some give in the ground, there’s no question about that,”
Despite being beaten more than four-lengths by the Freddie Head-trained Solow, Hannon says he would have no fear of taking that rival on again if there was a bit more give in the ground and he is eyeing up a trip to France to possibly do so.
The ground, rather than the opposition, will be the deciding factor.
“We’ll have to pick our races carefully. I wouldn’t be worried about taking on Solow or those good horses again if we had our ground,” Hannon added. “He’s better on that sort of ground and if they get that in Paris or Deauville anytime during the summer we’ll go there.”
Meanwhile Hannon’s Lustrous heads north this weekend to Haydock for a tilt at The Lancashire Oaks…..

Today’s Thirsk Timeform…
14.00 Yorkshire Blue Maiden Auction Stakes (5) 6f
Timeform Top Rated
94 11. MECCA’S MISSUS Michael Dods Connor Beasley
86p 14. POPSIES JOY Tim Easterby Duran Fentiman
85 7. BACK TO BOND Richard Fahey Paul Hanagan
Analyst’s Verdict: Mecca’s Missus improved significantly on her second start when narrowly beaten over C&D 23 days ago, and can get off the mark at the third time of asking. Popsies Joy and Back To Bond head the list of dangers in this opening event.
14.30 Lincolnshire Poacher Selling Stakes (6) 7f
Timeform Top Rated
82p 5. DYLAN ALEXANDER David Evans Graham Gibbons
78 4. CLIODHNA Mick Channon Graham Lee
63 3. BALQEES David Evans Non Runner
Analyst’s Verdict: Dylan Alexander has shown gradual improvement in maidens, relishing the step up to this trip when fourth at Chester last week, and will take some stopping in this much easier grade. Little Pippin is entitled to improve for her debut experience and may prove a bigger threat than Cliodhna.
15.00 Lancashire Crumbly Handicap (6) (D.I) 6f
Timeform Top Rated
85 8. GAELIC WIZARD Karen Tutty Gemma Tutty (5)
78 4. SPOWARTICUS Scott Dixon Dale Swift
77 11. SINGING STAR Antony Brittain David Allan
Analyst’s Verdict: Euxton has shown plenty of ability in a trio of sprint maidens, running on late when third at Hamilton in June. She remains with potential to do better still, and has sound prospects of making a winning start to life in handicaps. Gaelic Wizard signalled a return to form when runner-up in a Ripon claimer last month and is feared most. Divertimenti may fare best of the remainder.
15.30 Lancashire Crumbly Handicap (6) (D.II) 6f
Timeform Top Rated
77 9. SIGNORINA ROSEINA David O’Meara Shelley Birkett (3)
76 3. YPRES Jason Ward P. J. McDonald
75 6. A J COOK Ron Barr Duran Fentiman
Analyst’s Verdict: Signorina Roseina arguably found the drop to 5f against her at Leicester last time, and David O’Meara’s filly looks worth chancing to bounce back in a field of largely exposed sorts. Ypres caught the eye in fourth at Beverley last time and he is feared, while Le Laitier may represent some each-way value.
16.00 Double Gloucester Handicap (5) 2m
Timeform Top Rated
86 7. KIRKMAN James Bethell Joe Fanning
85 10. FROSTY THE SNOWMAN Ruth Carr James Sullivan
85§ 1. DR IRV Micky Hammond P. J. McDonald
Analyst’s Verdict: A competitive staying event with Underwritten suggested as a possible value punt. The son of Authorized has been in good form (not seen to best effect latest), and now in the care of the shrewd Brian Ellison, he may be able to get back on the up. Dr Irv is the chief threat if replicating his recent Wetherby second, with Kirkman requiring a market check.
16.30 Farmhouse Cheshire Handicap (3) 6f
Timeform Top Rated
107 5. REX IMPERATOR David O’Meara David Nolan
105 8. KENNY THE CAPTAIN Tim Easterby Duran Fentiman
104 1. GREEB Charles Hills Paul Hanagan
Analyst’s Verdict: Greeb arrives relatively unexposed as a 4-y-o, posting a career-best effort when second on return at Nottingham. He could be the answer in a tricky handicap with the promise of more to come. The well-handicapped Rex Imperator and the in-form Vallarta are likely to pose the most significant threats.
17.00 Red Leicester Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (5) 1m
Timeform Top Rated
84p 5. CALIMA BREEZE Charles Hills Graham Gibbons
83 11. TIME SPACE K. R. Burke Joey Haynes (3)
78 2. SIMPLY ROUGE Peter Niven Graham Lee
Analyst’s Verdict: It’s reasonable to think we have yet to see the best of Calima Breeze, and with a reappearance spin under her belt, she gets the nod having her first try at 1m. Newcomer Coppull Moor, Time Space and Simply Rouge head the dangers.
17.30 Somerset Cheddar Handicap (5) 7f
Timeform Top Rated
82 6. PUMAFLOR Richard Guest Jason Hart
81 12. TANAWAR Ruth Carr James Sullivan
80p 8. QAFFAAL Michael Easterby Graham Gibbons
Analyst’s Verdict: Pumaflor put up a personal best performance when successful over C&D last time, and is taken to follow up off just a 3 lb higher mark. Qaffaal caught the eye at Newcastle last week, and is feared most, while the unpenalised Nottingham winner Tanawar is respected, also.
