United suffer Van Persie setback
Manchester United have suffered a Robin van Persie setback as the striker has been ruled out for between four and six weeks.
The Netherlands international left the field on a stretcher on Wednesday night after a collision late on in United’s 3-0 Champions League win over Olympiakos.
Van Persie’s injury was the only downer on a good night for David Moyes’s men, the former Arsenal striker’s hat-trick helping them reach the quarter-finals of the competition.
United could now be without the 30-year-old until the last weekend of the season after the club’s medical staff diagnosed he had suffered a sprain knee.
A club spokesperson told ManUtd.com: “Following further investigation Robin van Persie has a sprained knee, which will keep him out for around four to six weeks.”
The injury means Van Persie will miss the majority of United’s remaining games in the Premier League, as well as their Champions League quarter-final with Bayern Munich in April.
After an excellent first season at Old Trafford, Van Persie has struggled for fitness this term and missed much of November, December and January with a thigh injury.
Despite his injury troubles Van Persie has scored 17 goals this season and will be badly missed as United look to kick on from their win over Olympiakos.
In his absence Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez will battle it out to lead the line for the Red Devils.
