Wednesday’s Capital One Cup News

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini will be without David Silva and Sergio Aguero for the Capital One Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday.

Both players will not feature in the third round clash as City start their defence of the competition they won last season – beating Sunderland 3-1 in the final. Manchester City are available at 9/2 to win the Capital One Cup outright this season and at 13/2 to beat the Owls 2-0 on Wednesday.

Pellegrini remains optimistic that both Silva and Aguero will be fit enough to feature against Hull City on Saturday, while Stevan Jovetic could also be available after being sidelined for the last two weeks with a hamstring problem.

We won the Capital One Cup and we hope that tomorrow we can start in the same way.

Samir Nasri and Fernando will also miss the Capital One Cup third-round encounter while Pablo Zabaleta is suspended following his red card during Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea.

Pellegrini said: “For tomorrow Sergio Aguero is not in the squad list because he has a problem with his knee, David Silva has a problem with his ankle and Pablo Zabaleta is suspended. Fernando and Stevan Jovetic are continuing to recover from their injuries and Samir Nasri has a groin problem.

“Every time that we play in this competition, and not only our team but every team, when you play against a Championship team it is very difficult. The motivation is not the same and they will come here and try to win. We had different experiences last season. We were eliminated here in the FA Cup against Wigan who were a Championship team.

“We won the Capital One Cup and we hope that tomorrow we can start in the same way as we played [in that competition] last year, because we won it with conceding just one goal and winning all our games.”

Sheffield Wednesday, 9/1 to be promoted from the Championship this season, are available at 33/1 to beat Manchester City 1-0.

Chelsea’s Spanish international striker Diego Costa thinks he is almost over his hamstring problems.

The 25-year-old, who moved to Stamford Bridge from Atletico Madrid for £32million in the summer, has already scored seven goals this season, despite being troubled by a hamstring injury that Blues boss Jose Mourinho recently said would stop him playing more than one game a week for the forseeable future.

Costa has already been ruled out of the Capital One Cup third round tie at home to Bolton on Wednesday, which Chelsea can be backed at 6/1 to win 3-0, but the striker insists he is now over the worst.

The truth is that over the past week I have worked fine.

He said: “I am still carrying some hamstring discomfort, but every day I feel better. The truth is that over the past week I have worked fine.

“I suffered an injury with Spain and could not play against FYR Macedonia (two weeks ago). It was a shame but then during that week I was treated and could play (against Swansea City).

“I’m working to get the best physical condition soon. The games we have now, almost every three days, will help me to get fit.”

Chelsea are available at 4/6 to win the Premier League title outright after drawing 1-1 at Manchester City on Sunday, and can be backed at 9/2 to win the Capital One Cup outright.
