Woods can win the Open

Rory McIlroy has warned that 14-time Major winner Tiger Woods is capable of taking the honours at the Open Championship at Hoylake next week.

Woods has been plagued by injuries in recent times and only recently returned from back surgery, but McIlroy does not think that that rules the American out of the reckoning at Royal Liverpool.

I still think he can do things that we have never seen from any other golfer.

“We have all witnessed what Tiger has been able to do over his career, whether that’s come back from injury and win (or) come back from any sort of off-course stuff and win,” McIlroy told reporters.

“I mean, he won the (2008) US Open on one leg, really on one leg. So is it foolish for people to write him off? I would say so. If he’s playing and he’s competing, he’s got as good a chance as any.

“We’ll see what happens next week.

“But then I wouldn’t write him off completely. I still think he can do things that we have never seen from any other golfer. We’ll see what happens.”

Meanwhile, McIlroy had reason to be happy after starting his campaign at the Scottish Open with a superb 7-under par 64, which included a monster drive which reached green of the 436-yard 13th hole.

McIlroy recorded eight birdies and just one bogey at Royal Aberdeen.
