Southwell Racecourse

Southwell racecourse is the only Fibresand track remaining in the UK and is an oval circuit of ten furlongs.

Set close to Newark-on-Trent, it is one of the busiest in the United Kingdom holding races all year round that total up to well over 60 meetings including the dual purpose jumps.

In terms of the AW, it’s another of the AW tracks that favours those drawn prominently as the surface rides deep, making it is very difficult to accelerate and pick up ground. Additionally and similar to US tracks there can be significant kick back if you are behind other horses and not ideal to be racing in the wake of others.

The nature of Fibresand is that it needs to be harrowed quite deep and this can throw up some strong biases with parts of the track quicker than others. There’s a consideration that the centre of the track is quicker than being on the rails in the straight, however being drawn low is also considered a huge advantage in 5f sprints?

We’ll consider and maybe challenge those thoughts below 🙂

As we can see, on the whole front running sorts fair best, however, Newcastle does favour the hold up’s as much as those who like to race prominently (‘a‘ very nearly equals ‘b‘) and what we will consider when analysing each course……..
