Wednesday – 18th April 2018

Examiner amazingly landed as a 20/1 winner from yesterday’s commentary, didn’t really expect that sort of price for one coming from the better side of the course. The first 4 home were all drawn high and obviously a consideration for the rest of the meet if the stalls remain the same. The form of Gosden panned out and the Tom Dascombe angle also threw up a winner as did the John Ryan selection Major Jumbo.

Today, Beverley’s gone to the weather leaving HQ as the only turf flat meet and the 2nd day of the Craven. It looks a serious day for the C1 players with only the opener, 13.50 Weatherbys General Stud Book Handicap C2 for 4yr olds and upwards as one to consider from our angles and plays.

1.50 Weatherbys General Stud Book Handicap (2) 6f

Timeform Top Rated:
120 4. SHANGHAI GLORY Charles Hills William Buick
119 2. AEOLUS Ed Walker Pat Cosgrave
118 12. BARRINGTON Michael Appleby Robert Winston

Analyst’s Verdict:
Several to consider in this competitive heat, Aeolus and Shanghai Glory chief among them. The latter, representing last year’s winning yard, may not get his favoured soft ground given the dry forecast, a factor which tilts the scales in Aeolus’ favour. Indeed, the 7-y-o is versatile ground-wise and features on an attractive mark. Eastern Impact, Barrington and Ekhtiyaar complete the shortlist.

2.25 bet365 European Free Handicap (Listed) (1) 7f

Timeform Top Rated:
118 4. RUFUS KING Mark Johnston Joe Fanning
116 2. NEBO Charles Hills Frankie Dettori
116 8. STAXTON Tim Easterby David Allan

Analyst’s Verdict:
Not beaten far in the Group 1 Middle Park here on his final 2-y-o start, Hey Jonesy could take some stopping if fully tuned-up for this seasonal reappearance. Indeed, Kevin Ryan’s charge remains with potential and while he’s clearly not short of speed, this step up in trip shouldn’t be a problem. Rufus King and the unbeaten Snazzy Jazzy merit respect but the consistent Nebo is feared most.

15:00 bet365 Earl of Sefton Stakes (Group 3) (1) 1m1f

Timeform Top Rated:
138 4. DEAUVILLE Aidan O’Brien Ryan Moore
132 8. ROBIN OF NAVAN Harry Dunlop James Doyle
131 7. FRANKUUS Mark Johnston Frankie Dettori

Analyst’s Verdict:
While Deauville signed off 2017 on a disappointing note, form such as his excellent third in the Queen Anne earlier in the campaign gives him a clear edge over these rivals. Indeed, if on-song he should prove too good for Robin of Navan, who has yet to strike on these shores but a reproduction of his C&D effort in October would put him firmly in the picture. Forest Ranger is best of the rest.

15:35 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (Group 3) (1) 7f

Timeform Top Rated:
124 11. THREADING Mark Johnston James Doyle
123 9. NYALETI Mark Johnston Joe Fanning
120p 1. ALTYN ORDA Roger Varian Silvestre De Sousa

Analyst’s Verdict:
The pick of these may well be Altyn Orda, who improved significantly when opening her account in the C&D Oh So Sharp Stakes in October. She displayed a good attitude on that occasion and further progress is anticipated. Threading’s reputation was dented in the Cheveley Park but she will be a big threat if back to the form of her Lowther victory, while Soliloquy and Nawassi are both of interest.

4.10 bet365 EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (4) 5f

Timeform Top Rated:
84p 4. HARD FOREST Mark Johnston Frankie Dettori

Analyst’s Verdict:
Hard Forest showed plenty when a close third at Newcastle on debut, worn down only in the final 100 yards, and can put her experience to good use up against newcomers. Strings of Life makes plenty of appeal on paper and is feared most ahead of Red Hut Red and Ginger Nut.

4.45 bet365 British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (4) (D.I) 1m

Timeform Top Rated:
94 2. BLANCHEFLEUR Richard Hannon Tom Marquand
93p 7. RIPLEY Charles Hills William Buick
87p 6. QAZYNA Roger Varian Andrea Atzeni

Analyst’s Verdict:
If there’s confidence behind Award Winning in the betting, the hint should be taken. Indeed, she ticks all the right boxes on paper and may prove too good for Qazyna and stablemate Rococo, both of whom shaped well on their sole 2-y-o starts and hold Oaks entries. Ripley is also one for the shortlist and, like the selection, Feline Groovy is an appealing newcomer who needs a market check.

5.20 bet365 British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (4) (D.II) 1m

Timeform Top Rated:
96 2. BUBBLE AND SQUEAK Sylvester Kirk Silvestre De Sousa
93p 4. DONO DI DIO Richard Hannon Sean Levey
87p 3. CEILIDHS DREAM Ralph Beckett Louis Steward

Analyst’s Verdict:
The well-bred Sea of Class holds an entry in the Oaks and it will be an ominous sign for her rivals if there’s confidence behind her in the betting. Fellow likely-looking newcomers Asoof and Mythical Queen also need a market check, but bigger threats may be posed by Dono Di Dio and Ceilidhs Dream, both of whom have shown ability on the AW and may do better now switched to turf.

17:55 bet365 Handicap (3) 1¼m

Timeform Top Rated:
108p 10. ISTANBUL SULTAN William Haggas Silvestre De Sousa
107 1. OLD PERSIAN Charlie Appleby William Buick
104p 3. BOW STREET Charlie Appleby James Doyle

Analyst’s Verdict:
A typically strong renewal of this handicap and the pick of several exciting types may be Casey Jones, who pulled nicely clear of the rest with another promising one when maintaining his unbeaten record at Newcastle. A 7 lb rise looks manageable and there should be more to come now switched to turf. Istanbul Sultan is next best ahead of the Charlie Appleby-trained duo Old Persian and Bow Street.
