Saturday – 5th May 2018

A real no show from our selection yesterday puts us rather back to square one and showing just a modicum of profit – but that’s the nature of the beast backing 8/1 plus and it’s a long, long way till September 🙂

With the guineas meet at HQ, we will leave that to those specialising in that sphere, albeit Brorocco goes in the 13.50 who gave us a nice priced winner last term and good too see Spark Plug thriving after that crashing fall at Ascot 2 years ago when we backed him.

Timeform is for the Guineas meet below and anyone looking for further inspiration from the speedmeisters…..check out the Guineas Preview link.

There’s further meets at Goodwood, Donny & Wetherby to consider – we said yesterday we expected a quite one and indeed it is…….the evening meeting at Donny is chiefly 7 runner affairs whilst at Wetherby, Jedd O’Keeffe will be is expecting good things from his 3yo Rare Groove – still a maiden we will take note of the colt’s performance today (14.30).

At Goodwood, the 14.40 has one we noted at the Craven Meeting going – Taurean Star doesn’t get a kind draw way out in 13 and possibly better watched today. Something like Squats for the in form Willie Haggas or Masham Star appeal more in the better than wipes yer face stakes in that one?

Like we said yesterday – a quiet and rare Saturday off from us in terms of members selections – there’s Hamilton to look at tomorrow and then we have a raft of BH Monday meets to consider.

We’ll be back before 10.00am in the morning with an update and as ever, please drop us a line at feedback@always-back-winners.com with any questions…..

1.50 Spring Lodge Stakes (Handicap) (2) 1m1f

Timeform Top Rated:
128p 4. SHARJA BRIDGE Roger Varian Andrea Atzeni
125+ 6. DOMMERSEN John Gosden Frankie Dettori
124 14. BREDEN Linda Jewell Hayley Turner

Analyst’s Verdict:
Sharja Bridge boasts some strong form as a 3-y-o, making it third time lucky in comfortable style at Nottingham in August. His handicap debut second thereafter was another improved showing and he can do better still this time around. Tricorn and Dommersen are solid from the Gosden camp whilst Another Eclipse is another interesting runner in refitted blinkers.

2.20 Longholes Palace House Stakes (Group 3) (1) 5f

Timeform Top Rated:
124 3. JUDICIAL Julie Camacho Luke Morris
123 8. MABS CROSS Michael Dods Paul Mulrennan
123 9. HAVANA GREY K. R. Burke P. J. McDonald

Analyst’s Verdict:
Mabs Cross, a progressive filly in 2017, proved she has trained on when an unlucky loser in a listed race at Bath on her reappearance last month, doing enough to suggest she can make an impact at this level. The 3-y-o Havana Grey has a big shout if picking up where he left off last season. Ornate is interesting starting out for David Griffiths.

Dunaden Jockey Club Stakes (Group 2) (1) 1½m

Timeform Top Rated:
133 2. DEFOE Roger Varian Andrea Atzeni
128 5. RED VERDON Ed Dunlop James Doyle
127 3. KHALIDI Clive Cox Adam Kirby

Analyst’s Verdict:
Very hard to see past the claims of Defoe, who was most progressive last season and made a highly encouraging return when easily winning the John Porter at Newbury. Khalidi hasn’t been seen to best effect so far this season having been a smart performer for John Gosden last term, so is selected for the forecast.

3.35 QIPCO 2000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1) (1) 1m

Timeform Top Rated:
137 7. MASAR Charlie Appleby William Buick
136p 4. GUSTAV KLIMT Aidan O’Brien Seamie Heffernan
134p 13. SAXON WARRIOR Aidan O’Brien Donnacha O’Brien

Analyst’s Verdict:
Saxon Warrior won all 3 of his outings last season, including the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster, and promises to make an even better 3-y-o given his size. He just shades the vote over his stablemate Gustav Klimt, who made an impressive comeback at Leopardstown. Elarqam and Masar are also high on the shortlist.

4.10 Hot Streak Handicap (2) 6f

Timeform Top Rated:
108p 9. VJ DAY Kevin Ryan Andrew Mullen
107 8. GALLOWAY HILLS David Elsworth Silvestre De Sousa
106 4. YAFTA Richard Hannon Jim Crowley

Analyst’s Verdict:
This could be a burn-up and that will suit Galloway Hills, who was unlucky not to finish closer in a C&D handicap last month when hampered at a crucial stage. He can resume winning ways. VJ Day was ridden more forcefully at Newcastle last time and could go well again if lasting longer. Chagatai and Yafta are a couple of other likely improvers.

4.45 Havana Gold Newmarket Stakes (Listed) (1) 1¼m

Timeform Top Rated:
126p 5. OLD PERSIAN Charlie Appleby James Doyle
122p 3. KEY VICTORY Charlie Appleby William Buick
115p 1. GRAFFITI MASTER John Gosden Frankie Dettori

Analyst’s Verdict:
Old Persian created an excellent impression at 2 yrs bar an excusable blip on his final start and he resumed progress in no uncertain terms when landing a C&D handicap on his return last month, showing a most likeable attitude to boot. He is fancied to make a bold bid upped in grade, though stablemate Key Victory, whose debut form is proving strong, and Graffiti Master aren’t dismissed lightly.

5.20 QIPCO Racing Welfare Handicap (2) 1m

Timeform Top Rated:
117p 6. SAM GOLD Roger Varian Andrea Atzeni
115p 1. SYMBOLIZATION Charlie Appleby William Buick
113 3. BOOK OF DREAMS Mark Johnston P. J. McDonald

Analyst’s Verdict:
Sam Gold was progressive in 3 runs last season, finishing just ahead of a subsequent Group 3 winner at Nottingham on his final start, and an opening mark of 86 may well underestimate him on return. Symbolization is potentially smart and is another who looks on a handy opening mark.
