Friday – 20th July 2018

A Friday evening at Ponty usually wets the appetite but this evening aside from the C2 claimer there are no decent fields to get stuck into. Dandy Highwayman is on our radar and offers a tad of value in the last (9.10), albeit that is just a 7 runner. He’s well capable when dropped to this class but Ponty’s stiff uphill 6f my just find him out being a 5 and 6f specialist and never beyond on a testing track?

There’s nothing of note for Newbury, Nottingham and Hamilton so we’re looking at HQ this evening and our local track, Haydock for our members selections today – Timeform comes from the latter below.

2.10 ROA/Racing Post Owners’ Jackpot Handicap (5) 1¼m42y

Timeform Top Rated:
86p 5. BLACK LOTUS Chris Wall William Buick
84p 2. KANNAPOLIS Michael Easterby Nathan Evans
84+ 3. MAGNETIC BOUNDARY George Scott Jason Watson (5)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Kannapolis opened his account in good style at Beverley and with that form working out he’s fancied to defy a 9 lb rise for another success. Black Lotus is the obvious danger after an encouraging handicap debut at Yarmouth when still looking inexperienced.

2.40 Smarkets British EBF Novice Stakes (4) 6f

Timeform Top Rated:
86p 3. CLOAK AND DAGGER Clive Cox Adam Kirby
85p 10. ARMAGEDDON Bryan Smart Graham Lee
82 1. AXEL JACKLIN Mark Johnston Joe Fanning

Analyst’s Verdict:
Tom Dascombe has been sending his better 2-y-os to this track and Five Angels makes plenty of appeal on paper ahead of his debut. Any market support would only strengthen his claims. Cloak And Dagger was very green in a hot Goodwood event first time up and looks sure to improve, as does Armageddon on the back of her debut at Thirsk.

3.15 Smarkets Betting Exchange Handicap (4) 6f

Timeform Top Rated:
103 5. JOHN KIRKUP Michael Dods Tom Eaves
102 8. ROYAL RESIDENCE James Tate David Allan
101 4. ANGELS Tim Easterby Daniel Tudhope

Analyst’s Verdict:
John Kirkup comfortably produced his best effort of the season when runner-up from a lessthan-ideal draw at Chester last weekend and, from this sort of mark he’s one to be interested in. Unexposed Royal Residence and Lethal Lunch back at 6f are a couple of others expected to feature in a strong race of its type.

3.45 smarkets.com Handicap (4) 5f

Timeform Top Rated:
89+ 7. GLAMOROUS ROCKET Ronald Harris Nicky Mackay
89 2. JABBAROCKIE Eric Alston Jason Hart
88 1. ALSVINDER David O’Meara Daniel Tudhope

Analyst’s Verdict:
Alsvinder is thriving and can notch up a tremendous 4-timer if turned out again quickly. Glamorous Rocket is seeking a fourth straight win herself and is the main threat ahead of Jabbarockie.

4.20 Smarkets Novice Stakes (5) 6f212y

Timeform Top Rated:
90p 1. SWISS KNIGHT Charlie Appleby William Buick
84p 3. MOLLS MEMORY Ed Walker Paul Hanagan
80p 4. NEW DAY DAWN Tom Dascombe Richard Kingscote

Analyst’s Verdict:
Swiss Knight sets a solid standard and looks up to defying a penalty with further improvement on the cards. New Day Dawn could take a big step forward from her debut and is feared most.

4.50 Bet On Horse Racing With Smarkets Handicap (4) 1¾m

Timeform Top Rated:
100 1. SURYA John Gosden Nicky Mackay
99 4. NIBRAS GALAXY Ismail Mohammed Joshua Bryan (3)
97 3. ASHINGTON Luca Cumani Richard Kingscote

Analyst’s Verdict:
The superbly-bred Surya could kick on in handicaps now he’s got his head in front and gets the vote over Newmarket-winner Ashington.

5.20 Smarkets Haydock Park Training Series Apprentice Handicap (5) 7f212y

Timeform Top Rated:
87 9. KING OSWALD James Unett Megan Ellingworth (5)
86 2. GOLDEN GUEST Les Eyre Joshua Bryan
86 7. ROCK WARBLER Oliver Greenall Jason Watson

Analyst’s Verdict:
Lagenda is the type to get back on track for his new stable, so it’s best to draw a line through his latest effort and take the chance that he can capitalise on a lenient mark/drop in grade here. The thriving Acrux is the big danger ahead of Golden Guest, who is expected to return to form.
