Friday Newsletter – 28th December 2018

No joy yesterday with Micky Hammond trained Wig Wam Wiggle who made no showing at all in a race that went to the 33/1 outsider of the three Philip Kirby runners we mentioned. Not a good holiday period for Hammond having tragically lost Just Bobby to a first fence fall at Sedgefield on Boxing Day 🙁

Today is a tad quieter than the last couple of days with just Leicester and Catterick to look at, albeit there is the 3rd day of the Leopardstown Christmas Festival for which there is Timeform below.

We’ve just one for members below from Catterick.

For those on the new £1k to £10k, current stakes are now £12.04 EW and the bank stands at £963.23

12.10 Sky Sports Racing Maiden Hurdle 2½m35y

Timeform Top Rated:
126p 7. ERRATIC PATH Gordon Elliott Davy Russell
125 4. CHARMED LIFE Mrs J. Harrington Robbie Power
122p 8. FOXY JACKS M. F. Morris J. J. Slevin

Analyst’s Verdict:
Elite Charboniere was bought for €155,000 after winning his second start in French bumpers and could be another above-average recruit for his excellent yard. He’s selected to make a successful hurdling debut. Erratic Path and Charmed Life are a couple of others likely to figure.

12.45 Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier) 3m

Timeform Top Rated:
161 18. RUSSIAN BILL Noel Meade Sean Flanagan
160+ 10. PLEASANT COMPANY W. P. Mullins R. Walsh
159 7. PLINTH Joseph Patrick O’Brien Shane Shortall

Analyst’s Verdict:
Grand National runner-up Pleasant Company is potentially well treated making a return to hurdling and receives a narrow vote. Walk To Freedom and Russian Bill head up the list of dangers in an ultra-competitive affair.

1.20 Ballymaloe Foods Beginners Chase 2m5f

Timeform Top Rated:
145p 2. BACARDYS W. P. Mullins R. Walsh
142p 4. GUN DIGGER Gordon Elliott J. W. Kennedy
139p 6. WHISPERINTHEBREEZE Mrs J. Harrington Robbie Power

Analyst’s Verdict:
Borderline Chatho had plenty in hand when opening his account over hurdles last time and is very much the type to prove better in this sphere, so he’s taken to cause a mini upset against some with a higher level of proven form. Bacardys would take some stopping if he’s on the top of his game and Gun Digger has made a promising start to his chasing career.

1.50 Squared Financial Christmas Hurdle (Grade 1) 3m

Timeform Top Rated:
178 7. APPLE’S JADE Gordon Elliott J. W. Kennedy
176 4. FAUGHEEN W. P. Mullins R. Walsh
173 1. BAPAUME W. P. Mullins Noel Fehily

Analyst’s Verdict:
This could prove a fascinating contest between Apple’s Jade, the best hurdling mare around, and longstanding top-class hurdler Faugheen, with the former marginally preferred on account of the fact that she’s still getting better. The others all have a bit to find, though a chunk of improvement from Cracking Smart wouldn’t be a huge surprise.

2.25 Irish Daily Star Christmas Handicap Hurdle 2½m35y

Timeform Top Rated:
131 5. LAKE TAKAPUNA D. K. Weld D. J. Mullins
130 20. RAGIN CAJUN Noel Meade Sean Flanagan
129 1. APACHE JACK Stuart Crawford Mr B. G. Crawford (7)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Lake Takapuna and Mighty Stowaway are very well handicapped back over hurdles based on chasing form and could be the pair to fight this out, with the first-named marginally preferred, with the Church Gate regarded as another big player on the back of his easy recent victory.

3.00 Savills Chase (Grade 1) 3m

Timeform Top Rated:
179 10. ROAD TO RESPECT Noel Meade Sean Flanagan
176+ 12. SHATTERED LOVE Gordon Elliott J. W. Kennedy
176 3. BELLSHILL W. P. Mullins R. Walsh

Analyst’s Verdict:
Road To Respect looked better than ever when an easy winner on his Down Royal reappearance and can land this for the second year running. Bellshill took his form up a notch when last seen in the spring and may prove next best ahead of Balko des Flos, who chased home the selection 12 months ago, and Gordon Elliott’s Shattered Love.

3.35 Midland Legal Solicitors I.N.H. Flat 2m

Timeform Top Rated:
98 2. ASH HILL Joseph Patrick O’Brien Mr D. O’Connor
93 4. STORM FLIGHT Conor O’Dwyer Mr J. Williams (7)
85 5. THE BLAME GAME M. A. Gunn Mr D. L. Queally (3)

Analyst’s Verdict:
General Counsel gets the nod to make a winning start to his career, perhaps at the main expense of fellow newcomer Hell On Earth, although the betting will clearly provide more clues. Ash Hill showed promise at Punchestown last month and looks clear pick of those with experience.
