Friday Newsletter – 5th April 2019

Day 2 of the Grand National meeting and again there’s Timeform below to cover that.

It’s Leicester on the turf and Wolves on the AW for the two flat meetings today and we’re having a rare excursion onto the AW for members below.

Outside of that we backed KUPA RIVER a couple of times last term without success but who landed a gamble at Wolverhampton LTO  and promises to be suited by this extra furlong now on turf (16.15). The five-year-old accounted for a couple of decent yardsticks and should have more to offer for Roger Fell on at around wipes yer face 9/2 prices. In the Div 11 (16.50), Nigel Tinklers’s Firm Decisions is a C&D winner who should run well at a price?

For those on the £1k to £10k challenge…..our opening bank is now £999.88 and stakes are now £12.50 EW unless otherwise stated

1.45 Merseyrail Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (1) 2½m

Timeform Top Rated:
166p 18. TEDHAM Jonjo O’Neill Nick Scholfield
165p 17. ESPRIT DU LARGE Evan Williams Adam Wedge
164 7. MONT DES AVALOIRS Paul Nicholls Lorcan Williams (5)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Tedham emphatically built on the promise of his qualifying runs when making a successful handicap debut at Wincanton in January, and with the form of that race well advertised since, a 6 lb rise underestimates this progressive performer. Brio Conti and Canardier shaped well when fourth and fifth respectively in the Coral Cup last month and they head the opposition.

2.20 Betway Top Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (1) 2m103y

Timeform Top Rated:
163 3. ITCHY FEET Olly Murphy Gavin Sheehan
162 1. ARAMON W. P. Mullins R. Walsh
160 7. SOUTHFIELD STONE Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden

Analyst’s Verdict:
Itchy Feet‘s third-placed finish in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham is the best form on offer, and assuming all is well with him physically (reportedly bled) he will take some stopping. Aramon was a shade disappointing in that race but his narrow defeat to Klassical Dream reads well, while Precious Cargo is the unknown quantity who deserves a shot at this level.

2.50 Betway Mildmay Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (1) 3m210y

Timeform Top Rated:
179p 6. TOPOFTHEGAME Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden
172p 4. LOSTINTRANSLATION Colin Tizzard Robbie Power
166 3. DROVERS LANE Rebecca Curtis Sean Bowen

Analyst’s Verdict:
Topofthegame impressed with his jumping when winning the RSA in good style at the Cheltenham Festival last month and looks open to further improvement after just 3 starts over fences this season. Lostintranslation may again have to settle for second spot in a Grade 1, while Chris’s Dream looks best of the others.

3.25 JLT Chase (Melling) (Grade 1) (1) 2m3f200y

Timeform Top Rated:
183 3. MIN W. P. Mullins R. Walsh
182 6. WAITING PATIENTLY Ruth Jefferson Brian Hughes
180 4. POLITOLOGUE Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden

Analyst’s Verdict:
Politologue proved much too game for the strong-travelling Min when edging out that rival in this race 12 months ago and he is taken to repeat the feat having looked as good as ever when second to Altior in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. Waiting Patiently arrives here fresh after a light campaign and is the obvious threat.

4.05 Randox Health Topham Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (1) 2m5f19y

Timeform Top Rated:
175 4. SAN BENEDETO Paul Nicholls Nick Scholfield
174 23. CALL IT MAGIC Ross O’Sullivan Mark Enright
174 7. ADRIEN DU PONT Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden

Analyst’s Verdict:
Peregrine Run boasts an excellent strike rate as a chaser and is arguably still getting better so, on the back of a satisfactory prep run over hurdles, he gets the nod in a typically competitive renewal of this event. Janika will probably be contesting graded races next term, so he makes obvious appeal once more and Ballyhill’s improved jumping of late suggests he could get involved.

4.40 Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 1) (1) 3m149y

Timeform Top Rated:
165p 3. CHAMP Nicky Henderson Barry Geraghty
163 5. DALLAS DES PICTONS Gordon Elliott J. W. Kennedy
155p 7. EMITOM Warren Greatrex Gavin Sheehan

Analyst’s Verdict:
Champ‘s winning run came to an end when runner-up in the Ballymore at the Cheltenham Festival but he lost nothing in defeat to such a promising rival and sets the standard here over a trip he’s bred to stay. Dallas des Pictons looks up to this level given how he shaped in the Martin Pipe, while the unbeaten Emitom shouldn’t be out of place in this grade, either.

5.15 Weatherbys Racing Bank Standard Open National Hunt Flat (Grade 2) (1) 2m209y

Timeform Top Rated:
129 4. MCFABULOUS Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden
127 10. SANTA ROSSA Dermot Anthony McLoughlin Mr Finian
126 3. MASTER DEBONAIR Colin Tizzard James Bowen

Analyst’s Verdict:
Mcfabulous produced one of the best bumper performances of the season when coming clear at Newbury last month and holds outstanding claims. Unbeaten Irish mare Santa Rossa is the big danger on form, though it’s worth bearing in mind that this race has a habit of throwing up a big-priced winner and Hazm could fit the bill this year.

p commonly referred to as a small ‘p’; and the the horse is likely to improve
P commonly referred to as a large ‘P’; and the horse is capable of much better
+ the horse is possibly better than rated
? the rating is suspect or (used alone) the horse is out of form or cannot be assessed with confidence
§ the squiggle’ indicates the horse is unreliable (for temperamental or other reasons)
§§ the ‘double squiggle’ the horse is so unsatisfactory as to be not worth a rating
