Horse Racing Selections – 18th January 2022

Tuesday’s all-weather card comes from Southwell.

Biggest field is the (19.50) where a sole turf tracker is going. Looks a decent price to be around the places in this 4 paying slot race. There’s an additional one in a race earlier for two stabs today.

  1. There are people on this site who know so much more than i do about flat racing. I would say i would be in the bottom 10% . However, i think i would be in the top 50% of how to make some money at the game. Punting is a marathon and not a sprint. The correct mindset is required and also imo a portfolio of either methods or services. I advised many months ago about a free golf service, Ben Coley. He ended last year several hundred points in profit. This year he has had seven bets and is over 50 pts in profit ( just tipped Matsuyama 3pts at 20/1). Snowy (N.H tipster) is over 200 pts in profit in the last 3 months. Ron Robinson of Postracing is over 50pts up by dutching his ratings since badger ales day. My method of N.H racing and football bets is just over 20 pts up in the last four months. Some of these i use in the portfolio have had bad runs ( my own methods in particular ). However , i have faith in them and review after a period of time ( at least six months). I removed SP2A and put Snowy in around end of October (good move). Yesterday i backed Portelet Bay each way with Sky bet to four places. ABW is having a poor run and the extra place has helped soften the blow in these last few months. I cant always get what i want on with Sky but at the current a/w stakes it doesn’t appear a problem…….. People like Peter who has vast knowledge of the game( no sarcasm here) has found methods that he uses and appears to do well. I am not that good so rely on other services to beef up my profits. I am sure if members had a portfolio and patience they would make money or at the worst cut the losses. ABW will stay in my portfolio until late May when a decision will be made. I expect the results to say carry on with this service as that is what the past has said. Happy punting everybody.

    • Ian,i don’t if i mentioned to you before but there was a competition on line run by Gavin Priestley of Nag, Nag for which i came 2nd I was leading  going into the last round of the competition  and it came down to the very last race of the competition my tip was out with the washing Jacks tip was in 4th place so as  it stood coming to the last fence  i would be the winner but as we all know horse racing no such thing as a certainty  the horse in 3rd place fell at the last fence leaving Jacks horse to come home in 3rd place  which he tipped  EW i think this was run over 16 weeks ,so i had to settle for 2nd place,as it happens there is another tip idol coming soon so if there are any budding tipsters out there now is your chance. I know one sure fire method of how to stop Snowy in his tracks………… i will join him.

      • You did mention the Nag Nag tipping Peter and i believe you. I have noticed he has another one going very soon. Give it another go Peter. As for Snowy, i am not naive enough to know this run cannot continue. However, his write ups are very good and he is now over 245 pts up in three months. I think you have missed the boat Peter so do not join. It could be due a massive downturn. ABW is due a massive upturn and you have faith in your own abilities so carry on as you are. I will carry on with the banter and give you some stick. It is only a bit of fun as i do realise you know what you are doing at this game. Millers match off so at a loose end.

  2. Portfoilios are great until everyone has a bad run at the same time. You need an enormous bank and strong nerves at times like that.

  3. PS been doing the portfolio thing since 1997.

  4. Not sure that i agree with that Robin. I think it is more of a case of the other portfolio members bailing out the bad run. If you have some sort of confidence behind the team then in the long run you should be making a profit. I am also a believer in dividing the bank for each tipster/method according to how it is performing. For example your stakes would be less on ABW over the past couple of months because it is on a losing run. When the inevitable winners come it adds to the bank and you divide again. I do ABW slightly different and have bigger stakes between May to September than i do at this time of year. All about preferences. Glad you are doing portfolois Robin and have been using them for a long time.

  5. Its not an opinion to agree with or disagree with. I have seen it happen three times, where 5 tipsters concurrently have one of the worst runs of their life. Losing 500 points+ gets hair raising. I bet to 20 a point so a 10K+ losing run can dent ones confidence. The one tipster bailing out another idea works a lot of the time but just e careful!

  6. You are a much bigger punter than i am Robin. Using today as an example. Three rated races by Postracing showed a loss and the first ABW bet is down. However, the tipster in blinding form Snowy has tipped a 40/1 winner. I am a careful punter by nature and always go for the extra place where i can. My banks are £500 divided into 50 bets most of the time.

  7. My experience with following multiple tipsters is as you say, they ‘bail’ out one and other when individual services fall below the mark – which is all well and good on the face of it because you may still be £100 ‘up’ for the month.

But when you factor in the £150-£200 per month subscriptions you’re worse off than before you started!

In the last few years I can recall 1 maybe 2 months where all the services I was following made a profit – clearly that is a good month however the rest of the time I’ve found it to be no better than sticking with 1 or maybe 2 platforms over the long term.
