Saturday – 24th November 2018

First winter jumps meet at our local track Haydock with the Betfair Chase being the feature. We’ll be popping on down there for a couple of bets – it’s mainly C2 & C2 but there’s a Class 3 chase early on the card that we will be looking at from a members perspective. We don’t venture into C2 much but outside of members bets on a personal front will be backing Ch’tibello in the 13.50  – he had some decent winter form last year in higher grades than this and has dropped from mid 150’s to 147.

Timeform is for the same meeting below.

Elsewhere, there’s nothing of note at Ascot whilst at Huntingdon there’s a couple from our tracker out. In the (13.40), Snapdragon Fire goes in a Ladies event – he certainty wasn’t up to the mark at Cheltenham last week and not really a fanciable favourite upped another 8lb. In the (14.15) Truckers Highway goes in a 5 runner and should be about right after a run at Worcester last month and 6lb below his best winning mark – he could well be the one for the forecasts if not winning.

For those on the new £1k to £10k, current stakes are now £11.30 EW and the bank stands at £903.69

12.10 Read Paul Nicholls Exclusively At Betfair Newton Novices’ Hurdle (Listed) (1) 1m7f144y

Timeform Top Rated
152 4. GRAND SANCY Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden
151+ 3. DENMEAD Dan Skelton Harry Skelton
150 1. BLACK KEY Donald McCain Brian Hughes

Analyst’s Verdict:
Grand Sancy has made an excellent start to the season and this looks a good opportunity for him to notch a listed win having finished second in a similar event at Kempton last month. Black Key posted a useful effort when landing a Galway handicap on his final start in Ireland and could provide the main threat for new handler Donald McCain.

12.40 Betfair Each Way Edge Handicap Chase (3) 3½m97y

Timeform Top Rated
147 3. RED INFANTRY Ian Williams Tom O’Brien
146 4. VERY FIRST TIME Tim Easterby Brian Hughes
146 7. SAM RED Dan Skelton Harry Skelton

Analyst’s Verdict:
It’s easy to overlook Little Bruce’s quirks given the great impression he made when winning at Hexham recently. This longer trip should be within his reach and he’s worth chancing up in grade. Red Infantry and Very First Time could have more to come in their second seasons over fences and look the dangers in a useful staying handicap.

1.15 Cash Out In-Play With Betfair Graduation Chase (2) 2m5f127y

Timeform Top Rated
166+ 2. KALONDRA Neil Mulholland Brian Hughes
164 4. ACTIVIAL Tom George Tom Scudamore
159p 3. RIVER WYLDE Nicky Henderson Nico de Boinville

Analyst’s Verdict:
River Wylde blotted his copybook to a degree at Cheltenham when last seen a year ago but, prior to that, he’d looked a smart chaser in the making, so he’s well worth a chance to get back on track returning to a sound surface in a fascinating graduation chase. Activial must be respected on the back of a positive debut for Tom George, while his former stablemate Kalondra shouldn’t be far away.

1.50 Betfair Best Odds On ITV Races Handicap Hurdle (2) 2¼m191y

Timeform Top Rated
158 1. CYRUS DARIUS Colin Tizzard Brian Hughes
157 11. MAGIC DANCER Kerry Lee Tom O’Brien
156 5. CLIFFS OF DOVER Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden

Analyst’s Verdict:
Perhaps worth chancing Cyrus Darius on his first outing for in-form Colin Tizzard. This 9-y-o looks nicely treated on the form he showed when landing the Morebattle at Kelso in February, never mind what he was capable of earlier in his career, and a wind op since last seen could also have had a positive effect. Magic Dancer, Cliffs of Dover and Mr Antolini head the dangers.

2.25 Betfair Exchange Stayers’ Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) (1) 3m58y

Timeform Top Rated
158p 6. FIRST ASSIGNMENT Ian Williams Tom O’Brien
157 4. BOBO MAC Tom Symonds James Davies
156 3. SHADES OF MIDNIGHT Sandy Thomson Brian Hughes

Analyst’s Verdict:
Hard to ignore the claims of First Assignment who had lots in hand in similar company at Cheltenham last weekend and is 8 lb well-in compared to his future mark. For those who don’t like to play short, Captain Cattistock made an encouraging return in the Silver Trophy and looks sure to give his supporters’ a good run for their money now stepping up to 3m for the first time.

3.00 Betfair Chase (Lancashire) (Grade 1) (1) 3m1f125y

Timeform Top Rated
186 4. NATIVE RIVER Colin Tizzard Richard Johnson
185 3. MIGHT BITE Nicky Henderson Nico de Boinville
180 5. THISTLECRACK Colin Tizzard Tom Scudamore

Analyst’s Verdict:
Just five runners but a fantastic renewal and Gold Cup winner Native River is taken to make a successful reappearance from his old rival Might Bite. His superior stamina can see him home following what should be a fascinating battle up front. Bristol de Mai has a bit to find with that pair on their best days but his 57-length win in this last year is hard to forget.

3.35 Better Value On The Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase (2) 3m1f125y

Timeform Top Rated
156 1. CAPTAIN REDBEARD Stuart Coltherd Sam Coltherd (5)
153 2. VINTAGE CLOUDS Sue Smith Danny Cook
152 4. BRAQUEUR D’OR Paul Nicholls Harry Cobden

Analyst’s Verdict:
Captain Redbeard did well last season and tops the shortlist after an encouraging comeback over hurdles 3 weeks ago. Vintage Clouds is next best ahead of Braqueur d’Or.
