Saturday – 4th August 2018

With no selections yesterday let’s crack straight onto the Saturday cards…..of course the feature is Goodwood’s final day but we have ignored most of the meet and today will be no exception. The highlight from our point of view (watching) would be the (15.40) Unibet Steward’s Cup (Heritage Handicap) with near 30 going to post….perhaps from our perspective some value could be had about Justanotherbottle who really got done at Ascot when drawn on the wrong side of the track. He headed home that group and as a tough genuine sort could well give a big price run for the money with over 25’s available? The last (17.25) apprentices, we will watch and take note of anything dropping in class following….Fahey’s Delph Crescent is obviously on the radar.

Elsewhere there’s a raft of decent looking fields in the lower grades and we’ll look for our best selection from those for members below…..from those backed previously, old Crazy Tornado goes at Hamilton tonight (20.20) – he’s poorly drawn and despite a big price we have seen nothing to suggest he gets more than the mile……the ground is coming right for him and hopefully he’ll drop another few before the autumn.

Thirsk is the focus of our member selections below…..

In the 14.50, Jason Hart has a cracking chance of following up on Eric Alston’s Jabbarockie, no EW price but maybe one for you lumpers for your acca’s? He also has a cracking chance in the (16.35) when he rides Captain Jameson for John Quinn – the pair are in fine form and had a nice winner with Lord Riddiford at Goodwood – again that one is a 3yo taking on his elders but just about wipes yer face price 4/1.

For those on the £1k to £10k challenge….our bank has NOW grown by over 187% to nearly £3k with an ROI of over 50%….current stakes are now £35.07 EW.

On a slightly different tact, from a footy angle, the championship kicked off last night with Frank Lampard managing a win on managerial debut and now it’s countdown to the Premier League just a week away……not that we’re considering tipping up despite those two World Cup 14/1 boooms.…we’ll leave that to the specialists, one of which is Paul Ruffy at Matchday Profits. We had a good number of you follow him last season to the tune of a near £2k profit. Well he’s back with an offer for this season and that is HERE or check out more at the bottom of the page.

1.50 Qatar Stewards’ Sprint Handicap (2) 6f

Timeform Top Rated:
103 2. CLASSIC SENIORITY Marjorie Fife Martin Harley
102+ 19. HOLIDAY MAGIC Michael Easterby Andrew Breslin (7)
101 1. DARK SHOT Scott Dixon Theodore Ladd (7)

Analyst’s Verdict:
This looks wide-open and a chance is taken on My Amigo, who showed plenty of dash when fourth over 7f at Ascot last weekend and dropping back to this trip should be very much in his favour. Like the selection, Classic Seniority has slipped to a handy mark and is feared on the back of his solid effort at Hamilton. Others to consider include George Dryden, Boy In The Bar and Shepherd’s Purse.

2.25 Qatar Summer Handicap (2) 1¾m

Timeform Top Rated:
122 8. SOFIA’S ROCK Mark Johnston David Probert
121 11. WATERSMEET Mark Johnston Joe Fanning
120 2. ON TO VICTORY Eve Johnson Houghton Charles Bishop

Analyst’s Verdict:
With just 7 runs under his belt, Walton Street may well have more to offer and he shaped as though well worth another crack at this trip when third at Royal Ascot last time. Charlie Appleby’s charge gets the nod ahead of the progressive Melting Dew, who will be a big threat if coping with this step up in trip. Sofia’s Rock is the pick of the Mark Johnston-trained quintet and Pacify is feared, too.

3.00 Qatar Gordon Stakes (Group 3) (1) 1m3f218y

Timeform Top Rated:
135 3. DEE EX BEE Mark Johnston Silvestre De Sousa
128p 2. CROSS COUNTER Charlie Appleby William Buick
119p 4. SUN MAIDEN Sir Michael Stoute Ryan Moore

Analyst’s Verdict:
Dee Ex Bee has as yet been unable to replicate his Derby second but this represents a big drop in class having contested at the highest level on his last 3 outings and he can take full advantage. Sun Maiden wasn’t far behind Thursday’s Nassau winner Wild Illusion in the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot so is feared most.

3.40 Unibet Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) (2) 6f

Timeform Top Rated:
127 15. FOXTROT LADY Andrew Balding David Probert
126+ 17. GLENAMOY LAD Michael Wigham Silvestre De Sousa
125 2. SPRING LOADED Paul D’Arcy Ryan Moore

Analyst’s Verdict:
Not for the first time this season George Bowen turned what looked a competitive handicap into a one-horse affair when striking at Hamilton recently. On that evidence, he’s not far off the standard one would expect of a pattern-class sprinter and ought to go mightly close here under a penalty. Progressive 3-y-o Foxtrot Lady, recent Ascot winner Spring Loaded and Glenamoy Lad are live dangers.

4.15 Qatar EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (2) 7f

Timeform Top Rated:
103 2. DUKE OF HAZZARD Paul Cole David Probert
98p 1. CLOAK AND DAGGER Clive Cox Adam Kirby
92 4. GLORY Richard Hannon Martin Harley

Analyst’s Verdict:
Those with experience don’t set the bar all that high, and Fox Power, an expensive yearling, may well be able to make his debut a winning one. Sky Defender is another interesting newcomer, while Cloak And Dagger has more improvement in him, and may be the best of those with previous experience.

4.50 Qatar Handicap (2) 7f

Timeform Top Rated:
120p 5. RESTIVE SPIRIT William Haggas Ryan Moore
119 4. VALE OF KENT Mark Johnston Joe Fanning
118 3. ZAP Richard Fahey Paul Hanagan

Analyst’s Verdict:
William Haggas holds a strong hand with Restive Spirit and Nicklaus, both progressive sorts who may still be ahead of their marks. Zap arrives on the back of a couple of excellent efforts and is another to consider.

5.25 Qatar Apprentice Handicap (3) 1m1f11y

Timeform Top Rated:
105 10. POETIC FORCE Tony Carroll Poppy Bridgwater (5)
104 14. DELPH CRESCENT Richard Fahey William Cox (3)
104 3. KING’S PAVILION Jason Ward Connor Murtagh (3)

Analyst’s Verdict:
The Night Porter shaped as if on a fair mark with the way he travelled in a hot Newmarket handicap last month and can get back on the up with a third win in 4 starts. Poetic Force looks set for another big run. The hat-trick seeking Delph Crescent can’t be ignored, either.
