Thursday Newsletter – 27th December 2018

A nice Wetherby winner yesterday with SUGGESTION doing the business – Philip Kirby’s charge really kicked on from the 2nd last and ended up a very easy 7 length success.

Today is Welsh National Day at Chepstow ( not heavy) and just a couple of intro mentions here. Sue Smith takes Vintage Clouds for a tilt at this and our ex-gaffer, Trevor Hemmings will be hoping for another big ‘National’ run form the tough grey. He’s up 6lb from last years 4th in this race following a win on re-appearance at Haydock but be in the mix for jockey Danny Cook. Sue also takes one down in the box with this one for a crack at the opening maiden hurdle (12.30) – Hill Sixteen was an expensive purchase who should make up a good chaser. He has placed twice over the short stuff this term and despite being a close up beaten favourite LTO, should be again go well at odds around 7’s.

We’ll again concentrate on Wetherby for our members selection available below today.

For those on the new £1k to £10k, current stakes are now £12.35 EW and the bank stands at £987.83

12.30 Get Super Smart Boosts At Coral Maiden Hurdle (4) 2m3f100y

Timeform Top Rated
140p 4. HILL SIXTEEN Sue Smith Danny Cook
139p 6. JAMMY GEORGE Harry Whittington Gavin Sheehan
138p 8. KINGSPLACE Nigel Twiston-Davies Sam Twiston-Davies

Analyst’s Verdict:
A competitive maiden hurdle with Kingsplace just edging the vote. He showed plenty when fourth in a decent race at Warwick on hurdling debut 2 weeks ago and ought to go close with improvement likely. Nativegetaway and Jammy George head up the opposition.

1.05 Download The Coral App Handicap Chase (2) 2m3f98y

Timeform Top Rated
163 2. TOP GAMBLE Kerry Lee Jamie Moore
161 8. DOITFORTHEVILLAGE Paul Henderson Paddy Brennan
160 7. CALIPTO Venetia Williams Charlie Deutsch

Analyst’s Verdict:
Top Gamble’s losing run stretches back to early 2016 but he’s potentially well handicapped now and, provided he’s over his Cheltenham mishap, he could be worth chancing in a wide-open affair. Low-mileage Touch Kick, Le Rocher and Dusky Lark are others to consider.

1.35 Coral Finale Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1) (1) 2m11y

Timeform Top Rated
158p 1. ADJALI Nicky Henderson Daryl Jacob
157 4. QUEL DESTIN Paul Nicholls Sam Twiston-Davies
136 5. TAZKA Gary Moore Jamie Moore

Analyst’s Verdict:
Adjali represents the same connections as last year’s winner We Have A Dream and is the one to beat after his impressive British debut at Market Rasen, although the likeable Quel Destin is unlikely to go down without a fight in what is expected to develop into a straight fight between the pair.

2.10 “The Smart Money’s On Coral” Handicap Hurdle (2) 2m7f131y

Timeform Top Rated
149 3. TRUCKERS LODGE Paul Nicholls Lorcan Williams (5)
148 8. ANOTHER EMOTION Warren Greatrex Gavin Sheehan
147 2. SHANNON BRIDGE Dan Skelton Bridget Andrews

Analyst’s Verdict:
There should be more to come from unexposed 6-y-o Another Emotion, who lost no caste in defeat when runner-up on his seasonal reappearance at Sandown. Providing that he’s fully recovered from those exertions (had a hard race owing to the testing conditions), Warren Greatrex’s charge may prove too strong for Truckers Lodge and Virginia Chick.

2.50 Coral Welsh Grand National Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (1) 3m5f110y

Timeform Top Rated
171 3. ELEGANT ESCAPE Colin Tizzard Tom O’Brien
168 9. RAMSES DE TEILLEE David Pipe David Noonan
166 7. FOLSOM BLUE Gordon Elliott Mr J. J. Codd

Analyst’s Verdict:
This increased test of stamina should play to the strengths of Elegant Escape, who looks well treated off a 4 lb lower mark than when runner-up in the Ladbroke at Newbury and can provide Colin Tizzard with a second winner in the last 3 years. Final Nudge, who could revive after a break, Yala Enki, Looksnowtlikebrian and Ramses de Teillee are others to consider.

3.25 Coral #Yourcall Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (3) 2m7f131y

Timeform Top Rated
156 2. PRIME VENTURE Evan Williams Adam Wedge
150p 1. SKIPTHECUDDLES Graeme McPherson Kielan Woods
150p 5. FLEMINPORT Jonjo O’Neill Aidan Coleman

Analyst’s Verdict:
A good race that should produce winners over fences and Fleminport could be the one to get his nose in front this time after his fine effort at Bangor. Strong cases can also be made for Skipthecuddles, Prime Venture and Yalltari.

3.55 “Build Your Bet” On Football At Coral Standard Open National Hunt Flat (4) 2m11y

Timeform Top Rated
115 1. MOVE ABOVE Alastair Ralph Lee Edwards
104 3. BIG NASTY Martin Keighley Aidan Coleman
92 8. SPANISH STARLING Sarah-Jayne Davies James Bowen

Analyst’s Verdict:
Expensive point recruit Ask For Glory gets the nod to make a successful Rules debut having joined Paul Nicholls. Imperial Esprit and Born To Sting are other interesting newcomers, while Move Above ploughed through the mud to win at Bangor at the start of the month and ought to be very competitive under his penalty.
