Thursday Newsletter – 31st January 2019

With both cards again subject to inspection there’s Timeform for Southwell posted for those looking at some guaranteed racing on the AW.

If Fakenham goes ahead, our New Years Day placed selection, Regarding Ruth is back out in the (13.45) Mares Hurdle. She was only beaten three lengths here that day and as a ‘Flemensfirth’ probably needs a tad further. It’s a lumping priced 6/4 up against the odds on Stuart Edmunds trained A Little Chaos – nothing of value here for us but is highly regarded at home, to the extent of taking in a Listed bumper so will watch out for her on future runs.

However, looking at the forecast, there’s more chance down in Somerset at Wincanton and we’ve a members pick going there.

For those on the £1k to £10k challenge….we’re at a 35% win/place strike rate …..our bank is now £806.91 and current stakes are now £10.09 EW

1.35 Betway Sprint Handicap (6) 4f214y

Timeform Top Rated:
78 5. GORGEOUS GENERAL Lawrence Mullaney Phil Dennis (3)
77 4. DIVINE CALL Charlie Wallis Hollie Doyle
76§ 1. PIAZON Julia Brooke Harry Russell (7)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Gorgeous General followed up his C&D win with a bit up his sleeve at Newcastle last week and the hat-trick is a distinct possibility under a penalty. Piazon is always a danger at this level, while Divine Call is closely matched with the selection.

2.05 Play 4 To Score At Betway Handicap (6) 1½m14y

Timeform Top Rated:
72 5. FILAMENT OF GOLD Roy Brotherton Eoin Walsh
70+ 7. CROESO CYMRAEG James Evans Raul Da Silva
70 4. CONTINGENCY FEE Phil McEntee Grace McEntee (7)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Filament of Gold ran another good race when third here 6 weeks ago, again doing best of those who raced in the rear, and should make another bold bid. Contingency Fee and Croeso Cymraeg are others to consider.

2.40 Ladbrokes Handicap (6) 6f16y

Timeform Top Rated:
82 2. MELGATE MAGIC Michael Easterby Nathan Evans
81 1. TOBEEORNOTTOBEE Declan Carroll Callum Shepherd
78 4. VALLEY BELLE Phil McEntee Josephine Gordon

Analyst’s Verdict:
Melgate Magic and Tobeeornottobee rate the pair to focus on as improving, last-time-out winners, the former narrowly preferred with his effectiveness on the surface assured. Geography Teacher can provide some value of the remainder returned to the scene of his sole success.

3.10 Ladbrokes Home of The Odds Boost Handicap (5) 4f214y

Timeform Top Rated:
89 3. SCALE FORCE Gay Kelleway Toby Eley (7)
87 2. COOLAGH MAGIC Richard Fahey Tony Hamilton
86 1. SANDRIDGE LAD John Ryan Stevie Donohoe

Analyst’s Verdict:
Temple of Wonder was a little unlucky here back in December and a chance is taken on him winning an uncompetitive event. Sandridge Lad and Scale Force are both C&D winners and should be involved in the finish.

3.40 Follow Sun Racing On Twitter Handicap (5) 1m13y

Timeform Top Rated:
89 12. HAVELOCK Peter Fahey Shane Kelly
88 7. DASHING POET Heather Main Jane Elliott (3)
87 10. BOND ANGEL David Evans Katherine Begley (5)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Makaarim was an eye-catcher when making his fibresand debut here last month and returns down in class on a dangerous-looking mark. With Jamie Spencer booked, it suggests he is well fancied on his return to this venue. Zodiakos should never be discounted around here. Dashing Poet is in form around the track and is also a danger.

4.10 sunracing.co.uk Apprentice Handicap (5) 7f14y

Timeform Top Rated:
90 7. SOOQAAN Antony Brittain William Cox
89 2. LUIS VAZ DE TORRES Richard Fahey Russell Harris (7)
88+ 3. ESPRIT DE CORPS David Barron Joshua Bryan

Analyst’s Verdict:
Esprit de Corps showed enough on his run here at the start of January to suggest he can win races on fibresand. Dropping in class, he may be able to get a first win on the all-weather. Space Bandit is a big threat returning to the scene of his maiden win. Sooqaan is never one to discount on fibresand.
