Opening day of the Grand National meeting with Timeform below to cover that. There’s three from our tracker notes going in the (16.40) Red Rum Chase and that’s Philip Kirby’s Lady Buttons, Brian Ellison’s Forest Bihan and Sue Smith’s Cracking Find. The latter two look more of interest in throwing a couple of small EW darts at?

Preference would be for Cracking Find who always gives us the impression he stays at least 20f but they continue to push him at 2m. He hardly ever runs a bad race and if more rain falls between now and the off it could prove his stamina. He’s one of three likely to be setting the pace and on at big priced 20’s ….of the rest the obvious qualities of Thienval stands out with his record in races such as this (back to back 2nd’s in this race) and on at around 11’s.

We’ll be back with a look at the flat meet at Leicester in the morning.

1.45 Devenish Manifesto Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (1) 2m3f200y
Timeform Rating of previous winners: 175 168 173 171 165 (Avg 170)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Glen Forsa made a most uncharacteristic error at the fourth in the Arkle, but he’s well worth another chance judged on his convincing defeat of Kalashnikov in the Kingmaker at Sandown in February. La Bague Au Roi has been faultless over fences this season and is unlikely to give up her unbeaten record in this sphere without a fight. Sound-jumper Bags Groove shouldn’t be underestimated, either.

170p 2. GLEN FORSA Mick Channon Jonathan Burke

2.20 Doom Bar Anniversary 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1) (1) 2m209y
Timeform Rating of previous winners: 163 161 188 156 164 (Avg 166)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Triumph Hurdle winner Pentland Hills has taken extremely well to this discipline and can make it 3 from 3. Band of Outlaws looks more than capable of making his presence felt at this level on the evidence of his impressive Fred Winter victory. Fakir d’Oudairies is probably ready for a step up in trip now, so Christopher Wood, who has won both his starts with plenty up his sleeve, makes up the 3.

Timeform Top Rated:
167p 7. PENTLAND HILLS Nicky Henderson Nico de Boinville
164 5. FAKIR D’OUDAIRIES Joseph Patrick O’Brien M. P. Walsh

2.50 Betway Bowl Chase (Grade 1) (1) 3m210y
Timeform Rating of previous winners: 181 177 192 177 182 (Avg 182)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Kemboy’s Gold Cup was over by the first but that does mean he’s fresh for this and his impressive defeat of Monalee and the reopposing Road To Respect at Leopardstown over Christmas shows he’s a force to be reckoned with. He can gain compensation for Cheltenham, perhaps at the expense of Clan des Obeaux who faded late on in the Gold Cup and should be more at home over this slightly shorter trip.

3.25 Betway Aintree Hurdle (Grade 1) (1) 2½m
Timeform Rating of previous winners: 176 179 191 178 175 (Avg 180)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Buveur d’Air has perhaps lost some of his lustre this season, but he’s normally a very fluent jumper and this is a good chance for him to regain the winning thread in a race he landed in 2017. Melon goes up in trip, while stablemate Faugheen drops back from 3m and they appear to be the main dangers given their excellent placed efforts at Cheltenham.

Timeform Top Rated:
177 2. BUVEUR D’AIR Nicky Henderson Barry Geraghty
176 5. MELON W. P. Mullins P. Townend
175 4. FAUGHEEN W. P. Mullins R. Walsh

4.05 Randox Health Foxhunters’ Open Hunters’ Chase (2) 2m5f19y
Rating of previous winners: 140 146 145 135 135 (Avg 140)

Analyst’s Verdict:
The one that stands out as having much more to offer in this sphere is Burning Ambition, who won with more in hand than the official margin suggests last time, and looks an up-and-coming force in the division. Ucello Conti was given too much to do at Cheltenham last time and looks a live danger, while Road To Rome also needs respecting.

Timeform Top Rated:
142 4. BURNING AMBITION Pierce Michael Power Mr Derek O’Connor
141 19. ROAD TO ROME J. J. O’Shea Mr Sam Waley-Cohen

4.40 Red Rum Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (1) 1m7f176y

Analyst’s Verdict:
A typically competitive renewal with the narrow vote in favour of the really likeable Lady Buttons. Phil Kirby’s mare impressed with victories over hurdles/ fences earlier this campaign and was far from disgraced in the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham last time. Diego du Charmil will find this is much more suitable than recent assignments and is feared, along with Whatswrongwithyou and Brelan d’As.

166 4. THEINVAL Nicky Henderson Jeremiah McGrath

5.15 Goffs UK Nickel Coin Mares’ Standard Open National Hunt Flat (Grade 2) (1) 2m209y
Timeform Rating of previous winners: 127 132 136 129 129 (Avg 131)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Minella Melody has a touch of star quality about her, running out an easy winner of a point before a facile success when sent off odds-on for a Gowran bumper last month. She’s sure build on that and is taken to progress beyond Miss Heritage, who sets the standard on her Carlisle romp, and The Glancing Queen, who was better than the result when fifth in the Champion Bumper.

Timeform Top Rated:
129 10. MISS HERITAGE David Elsworth Harry Cobden
128+ 15. THE GLANCING QUEEN Alan King Wayne Hutchinson
127 16. TIMETOCHILL Kelly Morgan Ross Chapman
