Wednesday Newsletter – 2nd January 2019

With the holiday racing period effectively over it’s Ayr and Hereford to kick off the meat and veg meetings for 2019. There’s Timeform for the former and a couple of suggestions below.

At Hereford, possibly one for the lumpers is Johnjo’s Bahama Moon (12.30) – he’s put a couple of solid efforts in to date and this sound performer on the flat could well go well at just wipes yer face prices in the opener.

We have a couple of runners north of the border at Ayr for members below.

For those on the £1k to £10k challenge….we’ve now over a 33% win/place strike rate …..our bank is now £992.38 and current stakes are now £12.40 EW

12.30 Book For The Coral Scottish Grand National Maiden Hurdle (5) 2½m100y

Timeform Top Rated:
135p 6. JOHNBB Tom Lacey Aidan Coleman
111 8. MISTERMOONBOY Leonard Kerr Danny Cook
105 7. MANETTI N. W. Alexander Lucy Alexander

Analyst’s Verdict:
Johnbb has shaped well in a bumper and a maiden hurdle so far and he sets a pretty good standard with the promise of more to come. He’ll take some stopping, though Savannah Moon should give him something to think about on hurdles bow starting out for Gordon Elliott.

1.00 Book For The Ayrshire Wedding Show Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier) (4) 3m70y

Timeform Top Rated:
134 4. STRONG RESEMBLANCE Oliver Greenall Ross Turner (7)
123 2. LETEMGO Andrew Hamilton Colm McCormack (3)
122 5. ASK THE TYCOON Lucinda Russell Derek Fox

Analyst’s Verdict:
It’s difficult to oppose Strong Resemblance, who has progressed with every start since joining Oliver Greenall and carries no penalty for his emphatic Boxing Day Huntingdon success. Letemgo and Ask The Tycoon may give him most to think about.

1.35 Ayrshire Wedding Show January 26 & 27 Novices’ Hurdle (4) 2m

Timeform Top Rated:
130p 6. SEBASTOPOL Tom Lacey Aidan Coleman
122p 1. DALI MAIL Donald Whillans Callum Whillans (3)
116 4. DARK RULER Jason Ward Henry Brooke

Analyst’s Verdict:
Sebastopol is the obvious route to go down here, given he landed a bumper at this track in impressive style and shaped well amidst inexperience in a better race at Cheltenham on his hurdling bow. He should be able to cater for Dali Mail in receipt of 6 lb, with Whoshotthesheriff a notable hurdling newcomer.

2.10 Happy Birthday Teresa Dewan Handicap Chase (4) 2m110y

Timeform Top Rated:
127 3. ECHO EXPRESS Nicky Richards Brian Hughes
125 2. MUMGOS DEBUT Lucinda Russell Derek Fox
122 5. COOL VALLEY William Young Jnr Danny Cook

Analyst’s Verdict:
Echo Express is less exposed than the others, going the right way, and boasts excellent claims of defying a rise for his gutsy Hexham success. John Williams looks the chief threat for all this track doesn’t suit him as much as Musselburgh and, at a likely bigger price, Cool Valley is one to look out for if blinkers perk him up.

2.40 Frazer Coogans Handicap Hurdle (3) 2m5f91y

Timeform Top Rated:
146 3. FINE RIGHTLY Stuart Crawford Conor O’Farrell
145 5. BRYDEN BOY Jennie Candlish Sean Quinlan
144 7. ROAD TO GOLD N. W. Alexander Lucy Alexander

Analyst’s Verdict:
Senor Lombardy isn’t the easiest to assess having had his chase career shelved after 2 outings, but if he’s back on song, he’s capable of winning over hurdles from his current mark. Aye Right is also unexposed and is second choice, with veteran Fine Rightly also considered having dropped in the weights.

3.10 Winter Weddings At Western House Hotel Handicap Chase (5) 3m20y

Timeform Top Rated:
118p 2. GLITTERING LOVE Nicky Richards Brian Hughes
117 5. FLYING JACK Maurice Barnes Dale Irving (3)
110 6. PURPLE HARRY Tina Jackson Ross Chapman (3)

Analyst’s Verdict:
There should be plenty more to come from Glittering Love, particularly up at 3m, and he can make light of a 9 lb rise. There were better signs from Present Flight at Carlisle last time and he’s well handicapped if he can build on that. Flying Jack was running well when coming down at the last on his return and can also get involved if none the worse.

3.45 Happy New Year From Ayr Racecourse Standard Open National Hunt Flat (5) 2m

Timeform Top Rated:
112+ 5. LILY’S GEM Stuart Crawford Brian Hughes
97 1. CURRAMORE Lucy Normile Grant Cockburn (3)
94p 4. HOLME ABBEY Nicky Richards Danny McMenamin (7)

Analyst’s Verdict:
Lily’s Gem was an impressive winner at Carlisle when last seen in April and looks capable of defying a penalty on her return for Stuart Crawford. Holme Abbey was too green to do himself justice on his C&D debut but has the potential to leave that form well behind and may provide the main threat unless one of the newcomers turns out to be above average.
