7 Furlong Sprint Specialists

Another area that we do concentrate on is the 7 furlong sprint races.

If we generalise, we could divide races into; sprint, middle distance and stayers with the 7-furlong race, right on that step up from sprint to approaching middle distance.

This intermediate trip seems to develop certain specialists in terms of both trainers and horses, so we’ll examine the bare facts to see if there are any angles of note?

Qualifying criteria:

2-year record, all turf tracks 7f handicaps with more than 5 qualifying runs and an IV > or = 2.14

Trainers

A rough first filter gives the above results, but when you look closer at Malcolm Blakes impressive looking figures for his limited entries it is predominantly based around his charge, Bounty Pursuit and we’ll dig deeper into the handicap races we target.

The above chart is filtered out with UK only, C2 – C6 Handicaps with an IV>2, who generate a positive ROI with above a 33% strike rate. This looks to throw up a few interesting trainer angles.

Just checking out the same filter for the 5-year view, gives the table below:

Notably, Cumbrian trainer, Dianne Sayer tops the pile with a three-figure ROI and a near 50% win strike rate. Mark Walford also features again as he did in the ‘early season sprinters’ post we published previously.

Others to consider are Grace Harris, Heather Main, Amanda Perrett & Rae Guest. Just a bit of a theme developing here with the ladies….sorry Rae 🙂

Front Runners

Again, filtering the above by front running sorts

This further fine-tunes the angle and again the likes of Dianne Sayer, Mark Walford, Grace Harris & Amanda Perret feature highly in terms of ROI. Another notable popping in if we adjust this filter to include Ireland, is Aidan O’Brien’s 13 qualifiers at a near 50% strike rate and over 230% ROI.

Jockeys

Just looking at Dianne Sayers choices:

Amazingly, one of our ‘whipping boys’, James Sullivan, comes out best of her booked rides with a mega 458% ROI and a 50% strike rate. Good on yer JPS, I have been one of your biggest critics over the minimum trips 🙂

Looking at best overall jockeys over the 7f: (C2 – C6, Handicaps)

Not much in the way of an IV over 2, so we’ll filter by those who race prominently:

This increases the ROI, and if we take out C2 that we rarely target:

Again this takes out a few more factors with James Doyle hardly ever venturing to these ‘lower grade races’. However, it does throw in some up and coming ‘eager’ youngsters, with the likes of Ben Curtis, Jason Watson, Hector Crouch & Rossa Ryan.

Summary

Again, a few considerations to bear in mind:

  • Look to back those who race prominently or at the head of affairs
  • Dianne Sayer –  her figures also stack up to the 1 mile trip. JPS bookings to be noted 🙂
  • Mark Walfords front runners: 20 runners, 4 wins/9 places – all charges. 14 runners, 4 wins/8 places – prominent runners
  • Aidan O’Brien’s 7f  Class 2 & 3 Handicappers – all over 250+ % ROI
  • James Doyle C2 front runners
  • SDS, Paul Hanagan  & David Probert, look good solid yardsticks in this market
  • Impressive, Jason Watson & Ben Curtis, C3-C6
  • Steady away – Hector Crouch, Rossa Ryan C3 – C6
